Hollywood's Obsession with Thin

Why We Need to Re-Work Our Concept of Beauty

The Good Guy Always Wins

I think most people can agree that Hollywood's perception of reality is slightly skewed. Or maybe a little delusional. Ok, dead wrong. In Hollywood, the good guy never runs out of bullets and will always win in any fight no matter what the odds. Ten to one and the good guy wins. Make that fifty to one and the good guy still wins. If this happens to be a Jackie Chan movie he'll do it with one arm tied behind his back.

Other Delusions

The improbable winner of impossible fights is not the only delusion Hollywood has. The main focus of this article is Hollywood (and society's) obsession with an unheathily thin physique. Magazines tout headlines of "Tone up all over!", "Lose 10 lbs, Fast!" and we fall for it. We've been taught that the only beautiful figure is one that has less than 6% body fat.

Well I think it's time that this perception of beauty was changed. I for one am tired of seeing thin, slim, and anorexic glorified. I think full-bodied is fabulous. I'd like to see some more natural looking females in magazines, movies, and on television. My basic point is that I think it's degrading to see the perfect body shown as absolutely necessary and achievable by everyone no matter what their genes, schedule, or lifestyle.

So here's to seeing more natural women in the spotlight.

Some Good News

While society's perception of beauty has a long way to go before we really appreciate natural beauty in all it's shapes and forms, changes are happening. Oprah puts a great emphasis on maintaining the healthiest you, healthy encompassing all areas of health and not just how slim your thighs are. Anyone seen Ugly Betty recently? America Ferrera has got some serious curves. Granted they are frumpy and all covered up but if you've seen Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants or Real Women Have Curves you know just how gorgeous she is in all her voluptuousness. Another positive hightlight of Ugly Betty. Salma Hayek. Anyone seen her lately? She's gained weight 15-20 pounds. But she still looks wonderful.

Hopefully, in the years to come, more natural looking women will come into the spotlight and become leaders in every aspect of the media. Society could use some more forgiving standards for women. Less the Devil Wears Prada and more Real Women Have Curves. Here's to beautiful natural women!

Grow up Sarah. Tell us, just what is the 'right' weight for you? Karen Carpenter before she died from being too thin? Mimi's weight isn't that bad, it's not like she's gonna die.
Hollywood has turned into a money-laundering cash cow ans is reaping the benefits of projecting unrealistic standards to young people my age (18). I'm 5'3 and weigh about 66kgs (dunno what that is in pounds) and I can't be happier about my weight.
Grow up, Sarah. The real world is not all about Hollywood's standards.

You said it mimi besides i love chubby women they seem to always have a smile on their face. Hollywood is just stupid.

Mimi, if you're only 5' tall and weigh 165 pounds, you are seriously overweight by just about anyone's standards. You'd be doing yourself a favour if you stopped kidding yourself and went on a sensible diet instead.

I am 5'0 and weight about 165, I know that by American Standards I am fat , overweight and out of shape. Well Hollywood I have news for you...I look about 10yrs younger than the avg American Woman and look better than some 20 something young girls. Is about confidence is about projection. Beauty is not a 5'11 -120lbs blonde, blue eyed. Beauty is the projection of your confidence, kidness and love for a self. I am who I am and beautifull on my own terms..
