At first it was a whistle,

Then a drowning roar;

Light exploded in the streets,

Buildings gushed with gore.

Within a few short seconds

The worst of it was done;

Bodies lay asunder,

Survivors cut and run.

But those who'd fled the city

Did not have far to go,

For the sky was full of needles

That would land and spread the glow.

From space the earth sat lonely

Within star-speckled black;

Its face was lit by sunlight,

But brighter was the back.

The glow spread in great circles,

Till encompassed was the globe;

The north and south poles melted,

Closing man's ghastly robe.

From dust he was begotten,

Dust he would become;

With his help God ensured it:

Man returned to scum.
