Holocaust Museum and the Murderer James von Brunn

On June 10, around 1 p.m., James W. von Brunn, parking conveniently in front of the Washington DC Holocaust museum (using a disabled tag) entered the facility and shot a security guard before he was overwhelmed with return fire.

At age 89, he had a long history as a Holocaust denier and also published an online book available for download called, "Kill the Best Gentiles." Although history, never a certain predictor of the future, an argument can be made that it played a predictable part as he plotted a similar attack in 1983. During this time he made an excited run towards the Washington Federal Reserve building with a shotgun. Luckily, there were no casualties and he was sentenced to 11 years in prison. This time around the consequences for the innocent were much worse.

At the time of this writing a security guard named Stephen Johns was in critical condition, and Brunn was hospitalized for similar life-threatening wounds at George Washington University Hospital. What makes the results equally bleak, was the fact that several elementary-aged children were in the museum at the time of the shooting. If it were not for the brave efforts of the remaining guards, the situation could have turned even more tragic.

To get a glimpse of his hatred, one need not look further than his stated mantra in his online book:

"The purpose of this book is to present to WHITE YOUTH factual information conventionally suppressed or distorted by the mass media, and denied them by schools and universities - which are forced to promulgate the Marxist line or lose their government subsidies." Brunn's racial and callous remarks were also confirmed by his ex-wife. In an article by the New York Daily news, she said that he made a statement possibly regarding his death that he would "go out with his boots on." Moreover, when he talked about the world, she stated that "he was convinced most of the country would be governed by black governors and that Jewish people owned the media."

Within his downloaded book and at his web page, he gives allegiance to World War II Rear Admiral John Crommelin. A further look at Crommelin's quotes, and one need not go further than the Admiral's claim that "Jews are the real enemy of white Christian Alabamians, asserting that they controlled the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People" to see Brunn idolized and adopted the Navy officer's white supremacist idealogy.

In the end, Brunn served as an example of the sickness, hate and fear racial supremacy can invoke, and questions surrounding his original prison release and lack of subsequent monitoring will likely be magnified in the coming weeks.
