Holy Pilgrimage to Paxitirth Near Chennai in India

Harishrai Mehta
India is a country full of holy places of pilgrimage. Many of such places can take you to see the miracles with your own eyes. One such place of pilgrimage is Paxitirth, located near the city of Chennai in South India. This is a very holy and important place for Hindu pilgrims as it presents the opportunity to see the Lord Shiva and Goddess Amba with their naked eyes everyday.

Paxitirth is located around 55 miles away from the city of Chennai in South of Chennai. One can visit Paxitirth by hired car or taxi from Chennai or any other major cities of South India. This holy place is situated on the top of the Mountain Vedagiri. The pilgrims need to climb this small Mountain on their feet that take around 20 minutes or so. This place Paxitirth is known as Trullu Kundaram in South India. This small Mountain is very beautiful with lust green forest all around it. There is a very large temple with a big Shikhar on top of this small Mountain. The Hindu legends state that Lord Shiva stays on this Mountain. The entrance way to this Lord Shiva temple here is very long, narrow, and may cause suffocation to some of the pilgrims as the air entry is quiet restricted on this walk way. Hence, please take care while walking through this dark walk way. The two large birds like eagles come here at this Lord Shiva temple everyday at the same time of 11.30 am for taking their lunch. This routine is going on continuously since last hundreds of years without interruption of a single day. Both these birds come from same direction exactly at 11.30 am, eat their lunch of rice put in an artistic Kumbha, offered by the temple priests, relax for few minutes and again fly back in the same direction. This routine can be seen on any day of the year. All the pilgrims gather here in the morning hours to see these birds eating Lord Shiva Mahaprasad. The solid stone seats are made for sitting of all the pilgrims to see the birds properly.

The story goes in the old Hindu Vedas that these birds were the two brothers. One was a staunch follower of Lord Shiva and the other was a staunch follower of Mataji. Both were fighting among themselves claiming that the god they each believe in is more powerful. Lord Shiva got angry on them and gave a curse that they will get the heaven only at the end of Kaliyuga. And till then, they will have to come to this temple once every day to take their lunch without fail till they get Nirvana. That is why these two birds keep on flying all day long to various holy places of pilgrimage. They do their night halt at Chitrakut near the city of Ayodhya. I have seen these two birds eating rice at the temple exactly at 11.30 am along with thousands of other pilgrims in spite of heavy rains on that day. You may call it a miracle or whatever you like but it is a fact that these two birds visit this temple every day invariably at the fixed time.

One can start from Chennai by morning hours like 8 am and can easily reach here by around 10 am. The temple can be visited and then, you can see the birds eating their morning lunch. However, make sure to reach prior to 11.30 am as the birds come exactly at the same time and are not delayed even by few seconds. There are no hotels or restaurants here at Paxitirth. Hence, please make sure to bring your food and the drinking water with you from your initial destination. You can start your return journey by around noon so as to reach Chennai by 3 pm or so.

I myself was not ready to believe this fact unless I saw it with my own eyes. There are many miracles still happening in this world even in this age of science and so called developed science is not able to get you convincing replies to those miracles. Such facts lead us all to believe that there is a super power above us all, which controls the world.

If you are still not ready to believe this, I would strongly urge you to visit Paxitirth once in your life time and see for your self this miracle.

Sadly, I was only in Chennai/Madras to leave India, having wound up more than five months wandering there. I wish I had the extra time for something like this.
