Homage to the Rapture Song

A Tribute to Larry Norman

Mr. Chip's
I wrote as a homage and tribute to Larry Norman. This more about my feelings and my re-discovery of the other side of my being. Which really makes me whole. That is my spirituality. Since I share so much of my life through my writings. And I write about mainly non-fiction. Sure I like to write about the fantastical and the whimsical. But at the end in my belief and many is another life. Of hope and promise and pure joy. I believe that way. For those that don't I am not going to try to force my views or change you if you don't want to changed. Like Mr. Norman wrote in his song I hope we will all be ready and I paraphrase.

Back to Larry. He was born in 1947. I am not going to make this a history piece like I said. I will only offer brief bio. on Larry for those to go back to learn about this fantastic man of God or child of God. Why my interest over his song I call "The Rapture Song?" Because it is taken from the book of the future, Revelations in the bible. Listen to the words. Maybe you have his albums or some kind of recording. Maybe you heard him in person in Concert. Maybe you knew him, met him or knew of him. Before he passed from this life to the life all Christians look forward to in heaven with God and our Lord.

I wished I'd had had a chance to meet Mr. Norman before the Lord called him home. I'd have so many questions about "The Rapture Song." Now I can only guess and speculate about how and why he wrote and sang it. And how it has impacted so so many. Including young believers such as myself. If I were to think of another song in the style of Larry's it would be "Pass it On" (Kurt Kaiser) based on scripture John 3:16.

"The Rapture Song" as I call it always gives me chills. Especially as I get older. And I think about the bible. And the scripture about "wars" and "rumors" of wars. Kids killing parents and parents killing kids. And all manner of evil in the world. More people getting involved in witchcraft and satanic activity. And all manner of horror and evils. Prophecy is happening all the time. And look at the miracles. If you believe in them. For me the fall of the Berlin Wall,Apartheid ending in South Africa,Chief Nelson Mandela being freed from prison,Chief Mandela becoming the first President of South Africa after the end of Apartheid and now in the 21st Century the first African to become President and Commander and Chief of the United States of America Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.

So when I listen to it now and when I listened to it when I was a Baptist in my tween years and then when I was a teen listening to it, "The Rapture Song" and "Pass it On" it meant alot to me. Then I watched the movies made about his song. And I could imagine what this world will be like. And even if you don't feel or believe that way. If you had any doubt would you want to be left? Without hope? Now it may be possible that some Christians may find themselves living that part of the bible if there will be those (believers) that will be here on Earth for whatever reason and not caught up in The Rapture. I will just have to study more. Like the saying goes the more you learn the less you know. Just look at the one if maybe the smartest guy on the planet Stephen Hawking. If Dr. Hawking is not the smartest then the circle he is in can't have too many members. Being that Dr. Hawking is occupying the seat that Sir Isaac Newton held when he was living. And this smartest of the smartest on this planet is still learning about the origin of our solar system. I say creation. So I guess I will agree to disagree in the only arena I will probably be allowed and as close as I will ever get to an opposite opinion with this a genius like Dr. Hawking.

And I think even the brilliant Dr. Hawking would say that perhaps he might feel that in science and maybe cosmology there had to have been a creator for all of this. The being that made both the chicken and the egg. I am basing this on his wonderful movie "A Brief History Of Time." Now I don't understand why I am writing all this about Stephen Hawking. About our current state of events. Maybe Larry Norman's song and me going back to listen to it again. Helps me to uncover more about it and our world and universe. Perhaps a decade from now I will listen again and get another revelation. Only time will tell. And I hope we will all have time and like Larry sings "I wished we'd all been ready." Thank Mr. Norman for leaving us with your song it was not a life lived in vain.

  • The man who wrote The Rapture Song
  • What the song means to me today
The day I wrote my essay about Larry Norman I had never known who wrote The Rapture song(Mr. Norman in 1969) or that another fave group DC Talk wonderfully covered it as well as others.
