Home Business Niche: Starting a Laundry Business

Angela Nelson
For the average, working American, laundry is a drag. After spending all week at the office, laundry can easily consume any free time available. This opens up a much-needed and desired niche for those considering work at home entrepreneurship; starting a laundry business. You may be ready to hit the ground running with the equipment and supplies you have already, but there are some things to consider.

Special Needs

Many people suffer from sensitive skin and fragrance allergies. Always check with your potential client regarding any special detergent needs, especially if small children are involved.

Find out how your client currently handles their laundry. Are items folded or hung? Are they thrown in the dryer, hang dried or dried flat? What about ironing?

Do they have a large number of Dry Clean Only items that need attended to? Are you willing to attend to the delivery and pick-up of those items as well?

Time Frame

Put your client's on a schedule. Let them know when and where you will pick-up and drop-off their laundry. Inform them of your turnaround time. Will you be available for rush jobs, or does everyone need to stick to their designated schedule?

Pay

Pay can be determined a number of ways. Laundry service professionals may charge by the pound, by the load, or by the hour. If there are other laundry service companies in your area, check into the going rate and standard way of charging. Determine if delivery charges and special needs will be included in your rate, or if those items will be billed separately.

Large Items

Are you equipped to handle large items, such as bedding and winter coats? If not, are you willing to visit the local laundromat and use their commercial machines. Will those items be billed by the piece, or at your standard rate?

Contracts and Licenses

As with any home business, make sure things are legal. Check with your local government for any needed licenses you must obtain to operate a business out of your home. Draw up a contract for each client to sign prior to work commencing.

Starting a laundry business can be a lucrative and rewarding venture. Ensure your bases are covered and your clients are happy.
