When running your own business, it is inevitable you will have quiet periods where you may find yourself watching the phone and waiting for it to ring.

If you find yourself in this situation there are a number of things you should do. Do not lose focus of your main aim. You must consistently advertise. This is the only way to guarantee you will be reaching new customers.

Periods of slow work can sometimes be useful as they give you time to go over, refresh and think of new ways to advertise yourself.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind next time you find yourself waiting for the phone to ring;

• Update - if you have some spare time, go back to any blogs, business directories or even your website, read through them and see if you can update them. Adding fresh content can attract people's attention. You may have a new skill you wish to add or an update on your recent activities. This will help to keep people informed and interested in what you are doing and remind them of your presence.

• Write an article - if you have some time to kill, think of something that you have done recently or of anything useful that you may be able to write a short article about, then post it on a relevant website. This method of advertising will help increase traffic to you site.

• Send Emails - if you look back at your work log, highlight clients that you have not done work for in a while, send them a short and friendly email, ask them how business is and if there is anything you can help them with, reminding them that you are still around to help them and it may make them think of something that they need your help with.

• Testimonials - if you have recently completed work for a client, send them a nice, short email asking them for feedback on the work you have done, where they satisfied with the service? And if they would mind writing you a short testimonial. You can update your website with these. This shows potential clients that you have many happy customers.

Never find yourself sat with nothing to do. Always think back over your marketing strategy and keep yourself well up to date with advertising. Remember that if you do not advertise yourself then people will never know you exist. If you keep on top of it then there is no excuse why the phone should not start ringing again very shortly!
