Home Décor Craft Ideas: Vintage Pinup Playing Card Mirror

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Vintage pinup artist's from the 1940s and 1950s had a classic style that truly has never been duplicated. This vintage pinup playing card mirror encompasses this style, and is perfect for a game or media room in a home.

For this project, you will need:

- One large wood framed mirror

- Vintage pinup reproduction playing cards (do a search on eBay or Google for these)

- Hot glue gun and glue sticks

- Medium grit sandpaper

- Tack cloth or other soft cloth

- Brown paper bag

- Scissors

- Masking tape

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon

- White colored poker chips

- Newspaper or drop cloth

Due to the use of spray paints and glues within this craft, it is important that your work area be well ventilated and covered with newspaper or a drop cloth. Dissemble the brown paper bag with scissors. Cut the bag to the same size and shape of the mirror glass. Adhere the brown paper to the mirror for protection using masking tape. Make sure there are no air bubbles underneath in which the spray paints and glues could get under.

Gently sand the wood mirror frame with medium grit sandpaper. Remove any dust or debris from the frame by wiping it carefully with a tack cloth or other soft cloth. Spray the wood frame with two or more coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Allow the primer to dry for one to three hours.

Apply one coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon to the frame. Wait fifteen minutes before adding a second coat. Continue this process of drying and painting until you have reached a desired bright pink shade. Allow the frame to dry overnight before continuing.

Gently "scuff" each of the poker chips with medium grit sandpaper. Spray each chip with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry the chips for an hour. Paint with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon until you have reached a desired shade of pink on the chips.

Remove the paper bag from the mirror glass. Heat up the hot glue gun and glue sticks. Apply a strip of hot glue to the right side of the mirror. Apply the vintage pinup reproduction greeting cards one at a time, alternating angles and card types. Adhere a few pink painted poker chips to the mirror. Let the glue dry overnight before hanging and enjoying your new mirror.

TIP: Original playing cards from artists such as Elvgren and Vargas can easily run over a hundred dollars. Many online stores carry reproductions of these cards, at a much lower price.
