Home Décor Magic: Making a Small Room Appear Bigger

Small rooms are quite difficult to decorate. When faced with a task of decorating a small room, you are actually faced with more delicate decisions to make. The danger of making the room smaller and more cluttered is high.

You are also left with only few choices in terms of the appliances and accessories you can use and the arrangements and positions of all your stuffs and ornaments. One wrong decision can make your room look disastrous.

So how does one really decorate a small room? Here are some helpful tips to guide you decorate a small room like a pro.

1. Use light and cool colors for wall paint or wallpapers. Instead of a deep red or violet color, opt for white, cream, light yellow, light blue, pastels, and other pale colors. Dark colors will only make your room look smaller, darker, and hotter. Light colors, on the other hand, will make it appear brighter and cooler and more spacious.

2. Use mirrors in your room. Mirrors will help create the illusion of length and space. They will add reflections of the room to make it appear twice its size.

3. Use smaller furniture and appliances. Big and bulky stuffs will use up too much space in your room. They can easily make the room appear crowded and cluttered even if they are only actually a few in number. Moreover, choose appliances and ornaments with thin and sleek designs.

4. Place furniture and appliances along the walls as much as possible, instead of in the center of the room, leaving more space in the middle. This will create an impression that the room is spacious. On the other hand, placing the appliances in the middle of the room will make the room look crowded and with less space to move around.

5. Similarly, place the appliances together as much as possible. This is to let the available space left by the appliances contiguous to each other. Collectively, the space will look larger and the room bigger. When the available space is divided and scattered in different areas of the room, each space will be narrow and will, thus, create an impression of lack of space to move around.

6. Put many hidden storage rooms such as cute boxes under your bed or on shelves. Put all your clutters and things into these shelves to avoid having them scattered all over the place. Because the room is small, unnecessary clutter will easily be noticed; they will make the room less spacious.

7. Use appliances with lighter and cooler colors. The same principle as that with the colors of the walls applies.
