Home Decor Craft Projects Using Fabric Remnants

Ideas for Room Makeovers

Fiber artists who are into home décor craft projects will benefit from sorting through the bins of fabric remnants at local fabric shops. While these small scraps of fabric left over from larger fabric rolls are no more than a couple of yards and less and are sold at discounted prices, they can be put to great use when you desire to organize, protect, repair, or decorate your home furnishings. Some great home décor craft project ideas for using scrap fabric are detailed below.

Covering/Repairing Arm Rests of Vinyl Recliner Chairs and Sofas

If not covered, the arm rests of vinyl recliner chairs and sofas are vulnerable to cracks or punctures from constant elbow poking. For this reason, I purchased a ½ yard remnant of black vinyl fabric to make coverings for the arm rests of my black recliner chair measuring 15 ½ inches in length and 17 ½ inches in circumference. This project involves hemming the length edges with a sewing machine and hand sewing Velcro along the width edges. I was very satisfied with the turnout of the arm rest coverings and recommend this project for both the prevention and repair of cracked vinyl arm rests.

Decorating Cardboard Storage Boxes and Containers

For those who regularly receive shipments in cardboard boxes and are avid recyclers, decorating these boxes with fabric remnants and using them for storage is an ideal home décor craft project. This idea requires no sewing - only fabric, a glue gun, and glue sticks. By creating a color scheme where the fabric boxes match the walls, one will be amazed with the achieved eco-friendly room makeover. A great tip for enlivening a room is to decorate various sized boxes and containers with floral print fabrics. These decorative fabric boxes and containers are suitable for storing toiletries, books/magazines, keepsakes, etc.

Sewing Coffee Table Runners

Since coffee tables are small in size, fabric remnants are ideal for sewing table runners. This also gives you the option of tailoring the runner to the shape of coffee table, whether it is squared, rectangular, or circular, thus saving you the effort of shopping for a runner of the right fit.

Sewing Pillows/Chair Cushions

Fabric remnants are the perfect size for sewing home décor pillows, pillow cases, or chair cushions. With a one-yard remnant of cotton fabric, I have sewn a pillow case for a pillow measuring 20 inches in circumference width by 26 inches in circumference length. I have also combined 13-inch by 17-inch upholstery fabric samples to sew awesome pillows.

Sewing Kitchen or Bathroom Curtains

Sewers are sure to discover lovely sheer or thin, pastel fabric remnants in clearance bins at fabric shops. One yard is enough to sew curtains that cover a 20-inch by 30-inch kitchen window. This project simply involves measuring, cutting, and hemming.

With enough creativity the options are unlimited for making use of fabric remnants. Fabric remnants are a cost-efficient way of enhancing and protecting a room and its furnishings - something to keep in mind during your next room makeover.
