Home Decor Crafts: Cupcake Embellished Photo Frames

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Cupcakes have become a very posh trend, both in the baked good world and the home accessory world. These sweet cupcake embellished photo frames are perfect for a little girl's bedroom or other ultra feminine space.

For this project, you will need (per photo frame):

- One unfinished wooden photo frame (available at craft supply shops)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style of soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper
- 1/4 inch thick wood crafting board
- Jigsaw or other similar tool
- Pencil
- Fabric scraps in cupcake themed colors (pink, brown, cream, etc.)
- Fabric marking pen
- Computer
- Printer with plain white paper
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Sponge brush
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Favorite photo
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

Before crafting this frame project, cover the workspace with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Remove the backing and glass from an unfinished wooden photo frame. Set these items aside. Carefully sand the wooden frame with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Then, wipe away any dust on the wood with a tack cloth or other similar style cloth. Prime the photo frame with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Once completely set, paint the frame with several coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper. Dry completely.

Do an online search for cupcake shaped children's coloring pages. Download one of these and print off several copies in the size desired for the cupcake embellishment on your photo frame. (The size is determined by how big the frame is.) Cut out each of these cupcake shapes with scissors. Keeping one intact, trace around the outside onto the 1/4 inch thick sheet of wooden crafting board in pencil. Very carefully cut the design from the wood with a jigsaw or other similar tool. Sand, prime, and paint the wood as instructed with the wooden frame piece.

With a second shape, trim the paper down to just the "frosting" of the cupcake. Place this piece on the fabric that you wish to use as "frosting" on the finished cupcake frame design. Trace around the outside edge. Repeat this process with a third cupcake design, creating a design for the bottom or cake portion of the cupcake. (Remember, the frosting is going to overlap the cake design by a bit so adjust the lines of the cupcake to accommodate.) Cut out the fabric pieces with scissors.

Apply Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the cake fabric piece.. Adhere the fabric to the center of the painted wood cupcake design. In the same fashion, add the frosting fabric piece over top of the first fabric piece. Dry completely.

Adhere the wooden cupcake to the painted frame with hot glue. Once cool, insert the glass, a favorite photo, and secure the backing to the frame in place.
