Home Decor Crafts: Giraffe Print Salt and Pepper Shakers

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Whimsical salt and pepper shakers are a fun way to dress up your dinner table. These giraffe print salt and pepper shakers are similar to those found in trendy home decor boutiques, but at a far less cost.

For this project, you will need (per set of salt and pepper shakers):

- Two smooth sided clear glass salt and pepper shakers with removable metal lids
- Mild dish detergent
- Water
- Paper towels
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots
- Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black
- Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
- Giraffe print scrapbook paper
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Lettering stencils
- Sponge brush
- Mod Podge or other similar decoupage medium
- Popsicle stick
- Salt & pepper
- Newsprint and/or a large sized drop cloth

To start, cover the area where you will be crafting your salt and pepper shakers with newsprint and/or a large sized drop cloth. Remove the metal lids from the shakers and set them safely aside. Wash the shakers using a mild dish detergent. Rinse well and dry them with paper towels. Turn the shakers upside down to air dry them for an hour or longer.

Prime the bottom and outside of each shaker using an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primed glasses set for about an hour. Paint the salt and pepper shakers using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots. Allow the brown paint to set for twenty minutes, and then apply a second coat of paint. If desired, continue to add coats of paint. Dry completely.

Place the sheet of giraffe print scrapbook paper onto the self healing mat. Create a wrapper for each shaker by creating a rectangle of paper large enough to wrap around the outside of each and meet in the back. Cut out the design with a craft knife. Place the lettering stencil over one paper piece. In pencil, trace a large "S" in the center. With the second piece of giraffe print paper, trace a large "P" in the center. Fill in both letters using a Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black. Let the lettering dry completely.

Add a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of one paper piece. Adhere that paper piece to the side of one painted shaker. Smooth the paper with a popsicle stick and your fingertips to remove any bubbling and/or wrinkling. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp soft cloth. Repeat for the second shaker and dry overnight.

Spray each of the shakers with an even coat of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Dry completely before adding salt and pepper to your new set and securing the lids.

TIP: These shakers are hand wash only when finished.
