For this project, you will need (per piece of art):
- One twelve inch by twelve inch by quarter inch thick piece of plywood (see note below)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
- Sheet music
- Black tempura paint
- Toothbrush
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Sponge brush
- Mod Podge or other similar style decoupage medium
- Pour on latex glaze (available at home improvement stores)
- Paint stick
- Cardboard
- Hanging hardware
- Newspaper, craft paper, and/or a large drop cloth
Cover the workspace with sheets of newspaper, craft paper, and/or a large drop cloth to keep the crafting mess at a minimum. Carefully sand one twelve inch by twelve inch by quarter inch thick piece of plywood with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Take special care to any rough areas or knots on the wood and the edges. (Note: Most home improvement shops will cut the plywood to size, if asked.) Spray the board using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait an hour before painting the board with three to four coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Let the board dry overnight before proceeding.
Lay out the sheet music paper flat. Use a ruler and a pencil to create a piece that is exactly ten inches square. With a sponge brush and/or a toothbrush and a bit of tempura paint, add a few "splatter" details to the sheet music to make it appear aged. Let the paper dry completely.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium with a sponge brush to the back of the sheet music paper. Adhere the paper into the exact center of the black painted wood board. (This will leave a one inch border of exposed wood all around.) Smooth the sheet music and allow the glut to dry overnight.
Lay the project onto a small piece of cardboard. Pour the latex glaze onto the art piece. Use a paint stick to extend the glaze to the outside edges of the board. Wait a few hours before adding an additional coat of glaze. Continue to dry and add coats until a thick layer is covering the entire board and sheet music. Cure for several days before installing hanging hardware to your piece and hanging as desired.
