Home Decor Crafts: Red & Damask Headboard

Landra Lynn Jacobs
If you are looking for a way to repurpose a boring flea market wooden headboard, this sophisticated red and damask headboard project is a great option. Remove any paint or stain using paint thinner or stripper prior to starting.

For this project, you will need:

- One wooden headboard in any size
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or any other type of soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red
- Krylon Spray Adhesive
- Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black
- Black and White Damask Print Fabric
- Ruler
- Fabric marking pen
- Fabric scissors
- Craft roller
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

Begin by covering the work area for this headboard project with old newspaper sheets and/or a rather large drop cloth. Very carefully sand the entire wooden headboard with sheets of medium or fine grit sandpaper. If there is any damaged or rough edges on the headboard, pay extra attention to them during the sanding process. Wipe away any dust or debris on the surface of the wood left by the sanding process with a tack cloth or any other similar style cloth.

Spray the entire wooden headboard with two to three thick coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. If you can still see any of the wood through the primer instead of a white color, then keep adding primer coats. Let the primer dry for a couple hours. Paint the entire headboard with five to seven coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red. This will give the headboard a bright red look, so keep adding coats until you are satisfied with the shade. Let the headboard dry overnight.

Lay out the black and white damask print fabric with the print side down. Determine the amount of fabric needing to cover the entire face of the headboard. Take this measurement and subtract one inch all around to create a smaller number. Draw this shape and measurement onto the backside of the fabric with a fabric marking pen. Carefully cut out the damask fabric piece with a pair of fabric scissors.

Spray the back of the fabric piece with Krylon Spray Adhesive. Immediately adhere the fabric to the center of the headboard face. This should leave a one inch border all around of exposed red paint. Smooth the fabric using a small craft roller to prevent bubbling and/or wrinkling of the fabric piece.

Trace around the outside edge of the fabric with a Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black to creation definition. Dry completely before using.

TIP: This project also looks great when Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon is used instead of red.
