For this project, you will need (per napkin ring):
- One unfinished wooden napkin ring (available at craft supply shops)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White or another coordinating color
- Several fabric rosettes
- One inch wide satin ribbon
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Floral style fabric napkins
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
To begin this napkin ring project, cover your work area with several sheets of old newspaper and/or a large sized drop cloth. Gently sand the outside of one unfinished wooden napkin ring with a couple sheets of medium or fine grit sandpaper. (Take extra care to smooth any rough edges in the wood grain of the napkin ring.) Wipe down the piece with a tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth to remove dust from sanding.
Prime both the outside and the inside of the napkin ring using two to three even coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (You should not be able to see any of the wood grain underneath.) Wait for one to two hours while the primer dries before proceeding. Paint the napkin ring with three or more coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White or another coordinating color. Let the paint dry for a couple hours or until it is no longer tacky.
Cut a small piece of one inch wide satin ribbon. Heat up the hot glue gun on a medium to medium low setting. Apply a dab of glue to the back of the fabric rosette. Adhere the rosette to the inch wide satin ribbon. Cool completely, which should take under ten minutes to do.
Apply a dab of glue to the back of the satin ribbon, approximately where the fabric rosette attaches. Adhere the ribbon and rosette to the painted napkin ring with the ribbon running vertically. Trim the ribbon so that only one inch is sticking off either end. Wrap the ends of the ribbon around to the inside of the napkin ring and secure with additional glue. Let the glue cool before inserting a floral style fabric napkin and enjoying your new creation.
TIP: Find fabric rosettes pre-made or create your own.
