Home Decor Crafts for a Teens Girl's Bedroom

Bronwyn Timmons
Teenage girls love adding style, flair and personality into their bedrooms. Unique home decor items are a must have for teen girls, and are a great way to showcase their personal taste into a space that belongs to them. However, most home decor stores offer vary little in terms of original or unique items, and they charge ridiculously high prices for basic things such as lamps and bulletin boards.

Creating your own, homemade decorations is an alternative to consider, and is far less expensive than buying your decorations from stores like Target or Bed Bath and Beyond. While the idea of hand making room decor may seem daunting, it is actually fairly easy. Using basic craft supplies and recycled furniture from thrift stores, you can easily make fun, one-of-a-kind items for a teen girl's bedroom.

Recycled Decoupage Nightstand

Turn an old nightstand from your local thrift store into a bold and unique piece of furniture that looks brand new.

Nightstand
Printed scrapbook papers
Mod Podge
Scissors
Foam brush

When choosing your printed scrapbook paper, choose colors and designs that will match the rest of the room decor. For example, if the room is pink, use a predominately pink colored paper with a fun print on it such as polka dots or stripes. You may also choose to use coordinating paper with images on it so that the images can be layered over the printed paper.

1. Wipe the dresser down with a damp cloth to remove any dust, dirt or debris from the previous owner.
2. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the back of each piece of printed scrapbook paper.
3.If you have any images or designs you want to layer over the printed paper, cut them out using the scissors. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the back of each one and stick them on top of the printed papers.
4. Adhere the papers onto the nightstand. Apply papers until none of the original wood is showing through.
5. Use the foam brush to paint a coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface of the night stand. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before proceeding.
6. Continue applying coats of Mod Podge onto the night stand. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. This will permanently seal the papers onto the nightstand. Mod Podge is water resistant after it dries, so it is safe to place drinks on the nightstand.

Ribbon Bulletin Board

A ribbon bulletin board is a great way to display and organize important photos and notes without the hassle of tacks. To create a ribbon bulletin board you will need:

Bulletin board (from dollar store of thrift store)
Fabric that matches the colors of the room
Ribbon that matches the color of the room
Fabric glue
Scissors

1. Cut the fabric so that it is one inch longer than the bulletin board on all for sides.
2. Lay the bulletin board face down on the fabric.
3. Apply a line of fabric glue across all four edges of the back of the bulletin board.
4. Fold each extra inch of fabric over the back of the bulletin board against the fabric glue. Hold in place for several second so that it is firmly secured.
5. Flip the bulletin board back over so that it is right side up.
6. Cut five strips of ribbon that are the same length as the bulletin board
7. Apply a small dab of fabric glue to both ends of each piece of ribbon.
8. Lay the ribbons out across the bulletin board so that the ends line up exactly with the side edges of the bulletin board. There should be an equal amount of space between the ribbons.
9. Cut five strips of ribbon that are equal in length to the width of the bulletin board.
10. Apply a small dab of craft glue to both ends of all of the strips of ribbon.
11. Lay the ribbons out across the bulletin boards so that the ends line up perfectly with the edges of the top and bottom of the bulletin board. Allow the fabric glue to dry.

To put photos or note on the bulletin board, simply slip their corners between the ribbons.

Decoupage Mirror

Create a one of a kind mirror using and old mirror laying around the house or one from a thrift store.

Mirror with at least 1 inch border
Printed scrapbook paper that matches the room colors
Scissors
Mod Podge
Foam brush

1. Cut strips of the paper that are the same width as the border of the mirror.
2. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the back of each strip.
3. Adhere the strips around the border of the mirror. None of the original border should be showing through.
4. Use the foam brush to paint a coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface that is covered with paper. Allow the Mod Podge to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
5. Continue to paint coats of Mod Podge over the paper. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
