Home Decor Ideas: Integrating a Flat Screen TV with Retro Mid Century Modern Furniture

Flat screen televisions are becoming a common household item and they can present a real decorating dilemma for a Mid Century Modern purist. One of the issues, when decorating with a modern flat screen TV, is that they are typically the focal point of the room and as such, they stick out like a sore thumb in an Eichler 50's era home or a post WWII bungalow. There are a variety of design strategies that allow you to use the flat screen as part of the décor and stay true to your Danish Modern roots.

Home Décor Ideas: Designing a Retro Mid Century Modern Wall

One of the first things to consider is wall color or cover. Decorating the wall where the flat screen TV will be mounted offers several options. The wall can be painted with a great color from the Mid Century Modern era. Of course, the color will depend on the furnishings, curtains etc. Some great colors from the era would be dark olive green, chocolate brown, gold etc. You might even consider painting the flat screen TV wall with bright abstract shapes reminiscent of Calder. The wall can also be covered with wall paper using a vintage grass cloth style. The idea is to use as dark a color as possible.

When the wall paint or paper is dry, purchase a mid century modern picture frame to place around the flat screen TV. The frame should fit directly over the flat screen TV to create the illusion of a framed picture. Find a frame that is about six to ten inches bigger than the flat screen TV so that when it's hung, the painted wall shows through like a framing mat.

Home Décor Ideas: Decorating with a Retro Mid Century Modern Credenza or Shelf Unit

Now that the wall is finished, it is time to think about what to put under it. A great decorating idea is to put a Mid Century Modern teak credenza underneath the flat screen TV. A credenza designed by Dunbar, Paul McCobb, Charles Eames and many other awesome designers would look spectacular and start to move the eye away from the flat screen TV to the awesome retro furniture in the room. Another decorating idea is to put a set of shelves under the flat screen TV. A George Nelson shelf unit would definitely take the focus of the room away from the flat screen TV and put it right where it ought to be...on the George Nelson shelf unit. The credenza or shelf unit is a great place to put that Bang and Olufsen audio system too.

Home Décor Ideas: Decorating with a Retro Mid Century Designer Vase

Find a beautiful Mid Century Modern 18" or so vase designed by Russell Wright, Fantoni, Polia Pillin, just to name a few, and put on one side of the credenza or shelf unit. If the vase is short, it might be nice to fill it with vintage ostrich or peacock feathers.

Home Décor Ideas: Decorating with a Retro Mid Century Modern Designer Lamp

On the other side of the credenza or shelf unit, place a fabulous Mid Century Modern lamp designed by such outstanding designers as: Romeo Rega, Panton or Sven Aage Holm Sorensen. Wow, your TV room has really taken on a focal point other than the flat screen TV now!

Home Décor Ideas: Decorating with a Retro Mid Century Modern Framed Pictures

The final step in this home décor project is to hang four mid century modern pictures across the top of the flat screen TV. The picture frames do not need to match necessarily but do need to be the same size. The pictures you frame, ought to complement the colors you have chosen to surround your new, but no longer the focal point of the room, flat screen TV.
