Home Decorating Projects101: Chain Link Fence

Eric Brennan
Chain link fencing is great for keeping pets contained or keeping them out. But did you know it can also be used for decorating? Nothing beats chain link fence for the industrial look and it's cheap and easy to install. From punk to industrial to Goth-whatever your theme, chain link fencing can be used an infinite number of ways for interior design. Without further ado, here are my favorite interior design projects that use chain link fencing.

Picture Wall

Installing a chain link fence for a place to showcase all of your favorite pictures from the punk rock show is easy and cheap. Order a chain link fence gate and then use the hardware that comes with it to hang the gate from the wall. You may want to hang the gate from the ceiling in which case you would need picture wire and two ceiling hooks.

Hanging your pictures from the chain link fence gate is easy. Simply purchase a few packages of sticky backed plastic hooks and attach them to your favorite pictures, hanging them from the chain link fence in various patterns. Best of all you can easily change the position of the pictures when you get bored of where they are at.

Closet Doors

A cool way to showcase your punk rock clothing, closet doors made from chain link fence is easy enough to install with a little patience and a few tricks of the trade. Using a hacksaw, cut a few chain link fencing tubing posts to the length and width of the original closet doors and put them together using four chain link fence corner brackets.

Cut some chain link fencing to length after hooking it to one side of the frame first, then stretch it out across the frame using a three hook come-along attached to two term posts, finally cutting it with a pair of bolt cutters. Attach the chain link fence to the sides with 16 gauge fencing wire. Hang each door using two sets of male gate hinges and female gate hinges. Finish it off with a gate handle for bi-fold chain link fence closet doors.

Bed Head Board

A bed headboard is easy enough using a similar method as described above, except you'll be attaching the heavy fencing to an existing bed frame. Using a hacksaw, cut a few chain link fencing tubing posts to desired height. Cut the remaining fencing tubes to the width of the bed. Put them all together using four chain link fence corner brackets.

Cut the chain link fencing to the desired length of the headboard after hooking it to one side of the frame first, then stretching it out across the frame using a three hook come-along attached to two term posts. Finish cutting the fencing with a pair of bolt cutters. Attach the chain link fence to the sides with 16 gauge fencing wire and a pair of fencing pliers. Attach the frame to the bed frame at the correct height with four 2 ½" U-bolts and nuts.
