Home Decorating Theme - Techno-Modern Goth

Beyond the immediate, and erroneous, assumption that everything Goths own is black and gloomy lies a far more complex subculture with a wide array of styles, many of which overlap. In this article we'll explore home decorating ideas for the Techno-Modern Goth.

Ultra-sleek and simple, this Goth home is completely free of clutter. Electronics have a higher priority than what they're stored in, and walls would likely be bare, aside from maybe a favorite horror movie poster or prints from gothic artists. Any special collectibles would be on display possibly behind glass.

Colors would be fairly stark; mostly black, shades of gray, silver, and white. There might be an occasional touch of circuit-board green, red, or blue. Fabrics could be vinyl, pvc, leather, possibly canvas or cotton. No wild prints or fussy patterns.

Furniture, of course, would be modern and minimalist. Leather couches, glass and chrome tables, and metal bookcases are good choices. Any color wood could work, as long as the furniture lines were clean and sleek.

Now that we have an idea of what we are trying to achieve, the next question is where to find what we need?

For the fabrics, you probably will find what you need at your local fabric store. But for the online shopper here are some resources.

http://www.mjtrends.com - In addition to matte and patent vinyl, as well as pvc and stretch pvc, this site also has an informative guide on sewing these materials.

http://www.jandofabrics.com - This site offers vinyl in different colors.

For furniture, accents, and accessories, you're not likely to find sleek and modern at thrift stores and garage/yard sales. But places like Target and especially Ikea have reasonably priced items that would be ideal for the TechnoModern Goth. And there are some online sources to look into as well.

http://www.craigslist.org - An online classifieds community that's growing in popularity.

http://www.eurway.com - Reasonably priced contemporary furniture and accessories from sofas to picture frames.

While a Techno-Modern Goth wouldn't be making crafty dried flower arrangements or designing their own shield, there are still some projects that might be of interest.

http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/gallery/0,21863,1057748-1,00.html - An excellent source of information about painting various furniture pieces, including wicker, metal, lamps, mirrors, and hardwood floors. Even rugs, throw pillows, and curtain rods are covered.

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/li_curtains_valances/article/0,2041,DIY_14043_2273546,00.html - Instructions for making a vinyl curtain with grommets.

Stripping your home down to reflect your slick Techno-Modern Goth sensibilities shouldn't be too hard or take too much time or money. And should your tastes change you'll have a practically clean slate to start redecorating.
