Home Exercise Equipment: What to Consider Before Buying

How to Choose the Right Equipment for You

When trekking 10 miles on icy roads to a gym doesn't appeal to your senses anymore, it's time to look into creating a home gym. Imagine being able to walk a few short steps and be ready to workout. Imagine no more waiting in line for a piece of equipment only to find that the guy before you left enough sweat to fill a child-sized pool. Imagine jamming to your favorite hits instead of the gym's nonstop CD featuring heavy metal's so-called greatest hits. Yeah, sounds good, right?

Buying home exercise equipment is not an easy task. Your first step to creating the home gym of your dreams (or at least the daydream version to start with) should be to carefully consider the three questions that follow. By answering them now in the comfort of your home, you'll have an easier time during the actual shopping process.

1 - What do you want to achieve? Figure out what your fitness goals are. Chiseled abs? Lean thighs? Flexibility? All of the above? Make note of which exercises will help in achieving your fitness goals. Then you'll have an idea of the types of exercise equipment your home gym should include.

2 - What's your spending limit? Figure out a reasonable budget and stick with it. Write it down so you don't conveniently 'forget' as you shop. If your budget is really tight, you'll need to narrow down the pieces of equipment your home gym will have. Make a list of all the fitness equipment you want. Decide which pieces of equipment will give you the most bang for your buck. Come on, do you really need that expensive calf machine? Instead, save some cash and buy a pair of dumbbells to do calf raises on your stairway.

3 - How big is your workout area? Factor in how much space you can reasonably fork over to your workout area. If you're living in a studio apartment the size of a large closet, then having a treadmill (which needs approximately 30 square feet of space) is not going to happen-that is, unless you plan on eating and sleeping on it as well. And rethink buying that 10-DVD set of Tae Bo videos. Can you do a roundhouse kick without kicking a hole in the wall?

Examine your needs before going shopping in order to avoid any regrets later on. Like that old adage says, "Don't put the cart before the horse." Do your research ahead of time to save time and money.
