Funded by the National Institute of Health, Dr. Herr and his colleagues discovered an antigen on the surface of the head of a sperm cell (SP-10). Incorporating their discovery, the SpermCheck Fertility test device was produced. 8 The device requires collecting 100 microliters of semen (been resting for 20 minutes) using a pipette ("A pipette is a glass tube used for delivery of a specific volume of a solution." 10). The semen is mixed with a buffer (detergent substance), which discharges the SP-10 protein from the sperm. "User then put a few drops of the mix into the two sample wells. Within seven minutes, the test results will appear in test windows above the wells." 11 Advisable to retake the test for a low sperm count evaluation a few days later, verify the initial test results were accurate. 5 If the test result confirm a low sperm count (both strips are negative) (or sperm count below five million sperm per millilitre 12) a comprehensive clinical or physician consultation is recommended. 9

Other factors that may influence the device test result: Frequent intercourse, obesity (Sagging layers of fat can overheat the testicles), excessive alcohol drinking, fatigue, smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day, and side effects related to taking medication and chemotherapy. 2
