Before the flood a few things should be done. Get proper insurance if you are worried about it. This can help you replace your home and belongings in case something happens. In areas that aren't likely to flood this insurance is so cheap you might consider buying it just in case.
Also prepare some supplies for you and your family. Have certain clothing, food, water, medicines, and other items set aside to grab in case of a flood. This gives you something to rely on if you need to leave the home because of flood waters.
After the flood there are things that you should do with your home as soon as you can.
Turn off your electricity as soon as you can. The mixture of live outlets and flood waters can be dangerous or even deadly. Get your power shut off to be on the safe side.
Go through the house with a video camera and look at the damage. This helps prove what is damaged in cause you need this for insurance purposes.
Turn the gas off in your home. Sometimes with flooding it can cause gas leaks. You shouldn't breathe this in as it can become a health problem. For the same reason, don't use any lighters or matches as you don't want to ignite the gas that could be leaking.
