Home from Hawaii with Just the Clothes on My Back

Cheri Majors, M.S.
In the 1980s I lived in paradise on Maui, Hawaii. I traveled home every summer to Southern California, to visit my family, and on one trip home I checked my baggage at the airport, boarded a plane, and five hours later arrived at LAX.

Family was waiting for me by the baggage claim, but my suitcase (filled with gifts, clothes, and makeup) never came down the ramp. After everyone else had claimed their luggage, I reported mine missing, and was promptly furnished with complimentary airline toothbrush and toothpaste.

Because I only had the clothes I was wearing, I spent most of my weekend trip begging clothes and makeup from my sisters. On Sunday I was due to fly home, and one hour before heading back to the airport, the airlines called to say they had found my suitcase.

Unfortunately they couldn't hold the suitcase for my return flight, because someone had already been dispatched to hand deliver it to me. They also could not promise it would arrive before I had to leave for my return flight.

Minutes before driving the Los Angeles freeways to catch my flight, the airlines arrived with my suitcase. I ripped gifts from my bag, tossing them to family members, and raced to catch my flight back to paradise. I spent the entire weekend in one outfit, without makeup, and vowed not to fly that carrier again.

I understand how you must have felt. I traveled well with Southeast airlines with one exception.
I am diabetic and there was no real food to eat on the flight. I started to see lights in my eyes.
My blood glucose level got too low. The steward on the flight wanted to land the plane to get me some help. I simply said do you have any orange juice? there was no food to eat after that.
I think all airlines need to have a sandwich for people like me
On the flight back I brought my own sandwiches.

Made for a memory, though, huh? Thanks for sharing!

My sister also lived in Hawaii for a few years. Weekend visits were frequent as she got hops to Travis AFB near our home. The military never lost her luggage, but probably because they carried everything! Fun story and it brought back memories! I'm glad you got it in time to distribute gifts!

Excellent &hearts: thanks for sharing this zany experience - some of the things that happen to people are amazing! I would not use that airlines again either.

Is it a great life, or what?

Glad that you could get some clothes from your sisters. I can just see you throwing the gifts to your family members as you tried getting on the plane. I don't blame you for not patronizing that airlines again.

One of the most outstanding things about the islands is that clothing is necessitated only to the degree required by modesty. It is truly an environment suited to human inhabitation... oh, to return and the sooneer the better (July, I hope!)
