Home Improvement Tips: How Wall Colors Can Change Your Mood

Tips on Creating Rooms that Enhance Your Frame of Mind

Everyone has a favorite color, but most people have several favorite colors according to where those colors will be used. For example, I love wearing the color red. It goes well with my dark brown hair, but I wouldn't want red walls in my bathroom. I love my light green bathroom walls, but I personally wouldn't choose green for my living room. Certain colors are appropriate for certain applications according to personal preference. Wall colors most certainly affect mood and can change the entire look and feeling of a space.

Don't Fall for the Fads

Instead of just going with the most popular colors, think about the popular colors a few decades back. Remember the classy avocado green, gold, orange, and brown of the 70's? Do you really think most people actually liked those colors? Of course they didn't! Their neighbors, friends, and relatives used these colors. Also, these were the colors most often seen in magazines and were promoted by designers, and that's why they became popular.

Choose the colors you want according to the mood you want to convey - not the colors everyone else is currently choosing. I'm not the type that follows fads of any type, and my decorating preferences are no exception. I chose wall colors in my former home because I liked the mood they conveyed, and I liked the overall look of the rooms.

Wall colors and mood should always be taken into consideration when choosing paint or wall coverings. The following information explains how different wall colors and tones can influence feelings, emotions, and mood. When you choose a particular wall color, you're creating more of an impact than you ever thought possible.

Blue

Blue is a soothing wall color, and it's a great choice for a bedroom or another room where you want to create a relaxed mood. Blue is also said to increase production. This cool color calms the mind and allows creativity to flow, and for this reason it's a fantastic choice for an office. Avoid using blue in a family room or kitchen. For some it can increase calmness to a point of being somber and depressed.

Orange

Orange is a wall color that people shy away from. For some it's too bright, but soft shades of orange are perfect for areas of the home where energy abounds. Orange creates a happy mood, and it's a wonderful choice for a kitchen, dining area, family room, or a dimly lit finished basement. If you want to lift spirits to an all-time high, choose smooth shades of orange. This beautiful autumn color will lift spirits and enlighten the mood in your home.

Red

Red is a racy wall color that gets the blood pumping. It's not a color that's appropriate for every room, but it's a great choice for an area that you consider the heart of your home. Choose red for the dining room, kitchen, living room, family room, or game room. Red raises the blood pressure, gets the heart racing, and creates a mood of excitement. Restaurants often choose red for the walls and table coverings because it's said to increase hunger.

Pink

If you want to create a room for relaxation and romance, choose lovely shades of pink for the walls. Surround yourself with a pink ocean of color, and set the mood for love with color-coordinating accessories. I've always loved the color pink, and it's a great choice for a bedroom, powder room, breakfast nook, or any other wall or room that needs a little mood enhancement.

Green

Green is a calming color, and if you've visited many hospitals or medical care facilities you'll notice many have gotten away from painting every wall white. If you want a room that creates a secure and relaxing feeling, go with light shades of green. Consider green for a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, den, or any room that demands a feeling of warmth, safety, and security.

I painted my master bathroom a lovely shade of green in my last home, and it blended in very well with my pink and white sponge painted walls. The room was topped by green ivy border, and the two rooms blended very well together to create a haven for romance and relaxation. You can do the same in your home, and you can set the mood with wall colors and matching accessories.
