For example purposes, we will pretend to decorate a living room. You may like to decorate a bedroom, bathroom, or any other room with the horse theme. If you choose to do so, the ideas we will be using for the living room horse decor can be applied to any room in the home. I would suggest that you first find a very cute sign or plaque that you can hang in your front door with a horse theme. You can buy these online, make your own with wood and acrylic paints from Wal-Mart, or even visit a market where there are wood-burning folk who can turn a piece of wood into a beautiful piece of art in an hour or less. The sign on the door is a prelude to those who come in that you absolutely love horses.
For the living room, we'd like a slightly country, warm feel that will exude the sturdiness and comfort of a horse. So we're going to focus on the word 'warm'. Warm brings colors like golden tones, soft and dark browns, a few black pieces, tans and beiges, and even a few touches of dark green.
You will probably want to find an area rug and curtains that match. For a very warm feel, purchase dark brown curtains in a solid color, and an area rug of that same dark brown. The area rug can have images of horses or other matching designs on it, but to keep the room from looking cluttered, keep the curtains a solid color.
If you have a bit of money, it may be beautiful to purchase black or very dark brown leather couches. But if money is as bit of a problem, that's okay! A beautiful horse decorated room can be done on any budget. On the couches you have, you can either leave them as they are if they match, or if they are an odd color such as white, pink, or polka-dotted, you can purchase fitted sheets of a color to go over them. Make sure the color is a more subdued brown than the curtains and area rug. You want a warm contrast. If your couch matches the living room already, buy a beautiful throw with a horse image on it to spread on the length of the back of the couch, and also get a few sofa pillows the color of the rug and curtains.
For the wall treatment, I would suggest a very large painting of a horse/country theme. It can have browns, tans, beiges, greens in it and other country colors in it. Make sure it goes with the warm feeling you're looking for. You can invest in a real painting, or find cheap but beautiful imitations in dollar stores and even Wal-Mart, of discount stores. Once you find a large painting, mount it on the main wall. Underneath the painting, nail up a shelf that is a little longer than the length of the painting. On the shelf, you can decorate it with a beautiful tan candle or a few candles and even prop up horse statues that you can find anywhere, especially from a Home Interiors sales person. Decorate the shelf with dark green plastic foliage with a look that is all your own. You can use your end tables to put up a lamp that is maybe made up of a horse cut-out silhouette, or even purchase one that has cowboys on it. To create an authentic look, look for a lamp shade with cut-outs on it of horses in action. Fill in other walls of the room with pictures of horses and cowboys. It doesn't have to be all symmetrical. By that I mean that you can kind of make a checker-board pattern with the pictures on the wall, and just be creative. This is a warm room that reflects your love of horses. It doesn't have to be 'straight-laced'.
The best place to find horse decorations is online. You can find decorations for the bathroom, kitchen, living room, den and more. Remember that you don't have to buy everyone all in one day. Someday you may see something horse related in a store that you absolutely love, and that's how you begin building up your horse decor collection. Look for sculptures and allow yourself to splurge on one absolutely beautiful, authentic item if you are on a budget. You owe it to yourself. Now it's time to make a list of what you need, and begin shopping. Remember to keep the room warm, comfortable, and inviting, and try to avoid too much clutter of little random objects here and there. Try to stick to bigger pieces that attract attention and help blend in the warm feeling of the room. Contrast different hues and tones of browns, tans, and beiges. Let your imagination run as wild as the untamed mustangs of the past and present.
