An airsoft gun is the perfect alternative to a real gun. While, of course, it does not have the power a real gun has, it still is an effective defense weapon. You don't need to seriously injure someone or kill them to stop them. However, a spring gun would not do well enough, because you would need to fire multiple times. You may be worried, if the assailant has a real gun, that he would be able to defeat you. This is not true. While it cannot be argued that he would have an advantage, you can still easily "win". If you shoot someone in the face once with an airsoft gun, they will immediately reach up to their face, even if they have a real gun. It really only take shot, because getting shot in the face with anything hurts A LOT, and the burglar will be stunned for a good while (only a few seconds, but in the moment, enough). This gives you time to run up and give a hit large enough to knock him out or disable him. The airsoft method should be used in conjunction with a bat, to be sure that you completely disable the assailant. The reason you should not use a spring gun is because one, they are not that powerful and would not hurt as bad, and two, if you miss, you cannot afford to re-cock the spring.
I bet all of this seems like a lot of trouble when you could simply kill the guy. Keep in mind that real guns are incredibly dangerous, and as mentioned, hurt more people then they protect. Also, you get into a lot more legal trouble if you kill someone, even if it self-defense. Not to mention, shooting someone makes a lot of blood, and then you have to worry about cleaning all that off your wall and carpet/floor (that's a joke).
Even if you have a safe neighborhood, something bad can happen at anytime. There are times when you might not feel safe for some reason. Having an airsoft gun can make your home feel safer; it does not have the serious damage capacity of a real gun, but it will work in an emergency. On dark and stormy nights, a simple airsoft gun can make the difference between feeling scared or calm.

Post a CommentThank you for the suggestion. It is true that, statistically, a gun in the home is 22-times more likely to harm someone in the home than to protect them.
I posted a blog post on alternatives to gun ownership, mainly in hardening your home so it isn't as necessary to have to move to self-defense:
http://newtrajectory.blogspot.com/2011/01/alternatives-to-gun-ownership-for-home.html
An academy instructor said to me, "Every decision you make has to be worth your life." I'll take it a bit further in a home defense scenario and say every decision you make has to be worth the lives of your family. Am I going to bet my family's lives on an airsoft gun when lives are at stake? No. I'm going to take the time and learn the proper use of a firearm. This doesn't just stop at the fundamentals of shooting. It includes the legals do's and don'ts and what to expect before, during and after an altercation.
I think that an airsoft gun would be effective against a burglar as long as it's one of the more powerful airsoft guns and your using .30 aluminum bbs
in most states you can keep the home defense gun loaded. (Keep it away from children or other unauthorized access. . . maybe in a quick to get to safe.) Also, about 2.5 million crimes per year are stopped by lawfully armed citizens; which is no where near the number of accidental deaths/ injuries. Spend an extra $100 and protect your family with an effective tool: a .45 colt.
Interesting but instead of air soft use a steel equivalent
(IE; 540 steel BB)
as in
http://www.airgundepot.com/ebos-bb-gun_pg2_pg2.html
so a bugler is just going to walk away from 360 BB's to the face? ALL going at 540FPS?
(Amusing you get the first shot and that this is your average bugler not some super bugler)
the average person would then know how/be able to fight that intruder TO THE DEATH?
I agree it's regrettable that there are so many accidental deaths from firearms, and I think that's because people are uneducated and irresponsible. Personally, I do own weapons, but I own them more out of principle and for recreation. I can't imagine ever having to use them at home as long as I lock my door. However, there is absolutely, positively no way a pellet gun (no matter how you spin it, it is still a pellet gun) is an alternative to a real firearm.
Again, sorry if I missed the humor; this response goes to show you how well this was written if it was!
Peace
I'm afraid I might have misread the article and didn't catch the sarcasm; if this article was supposed to be in jest, the kudos to you sir. That was funny!
If not: where do I start? How about we play out this scenario?
You wake up and hear a noise in your house; you look over to your significant over and think "what the $%^@?" You tell them to stay put and you grab your trusty high-powered airsoft gun. You step quietly through your place, and (dun dun dun) there he is! There's some guy rummaging through your crap. He turns to you; you react like James Bond and pop him square between the eyes/ sensitive location of your choice.
He gets surprised/shocked/angry and shoots you in the guts. You die a painful and slow death. Yes, that is how that would play out.
Let me tell you a few things I've learned as a Marine (not trying to get any oows-and-awes, just letting you know that this advice is real). I knew a Captain a while back and he had a decent sized scar on his forearm. H
MrAirsoft, With much respect, this article seemed to me as if it was written by a 12 year old mall ninja. YOUR ADVICE WILL GET PEOPLE KILLED!!! If a burglar broke into your house with the intent of raping and murdering your family, with the possibility of being armed with a deadly weapon, do you HONESTLY think a few stings from an airsoft gun will stop him? And stop arguing about how a powerful airsoft gun can take someone down, you VERY well know it cant, unless the person you're trying to take down is 12. Your arguments against owning a real firearm for protection is childish.
Just please, do everyone a favor and stop writing self defense articles.
Stupid article is stupid as hell. An airsoft gun will not "down" someone unless that someone is a 12 year old. I mean there is just so much wrong with this article and mostly the defending comments that I do not even know where to begin.
"Also, you are supposed to keep the ammo and the gun in separate places"
while this may very between states this is almost generally not the case. Get your facts straight
a gun = best home defense weapon
those statistics about shooting your own family member are skewed by anti-gun lobbyists who factor in suicide into that "fact"
