Home Remedies from Around the World

Georgia Lund

In my never ending quest to find better and more effective ways of treating common maladies, such as sore throat, nasal congestion, digestive issues and daily aches and pains, I've encountered like-minded people from around the world. No matter where we hail from, we all share similar health problems and we all want effective relief that is both quick and cheap. Simple home remedies are often the answer and these are some home remedies that I've gathered from around the world that might help cure your own malady.

Ukraine Home Remedy for Sore Throat

Gargle every two hours with a mixture of one-half cup of hot water and one tablespoon each of honey and vinegar. Honey is an anti-inflammatory which soothes the throat lining and vinegar works as astringent to clear out the excess mucus and restore the pH balance in the throat.

Russian Home Remedy for Nasal Congestion

In a small bowl, juice one clove of fresh garlic with a garlic press. Add one half teaspoon of honey and the inside juice and gel of an Aloe Vera leaf (snip off the leaf from an Aloe Vera plant and squeeze out the contents of the leaf into bowl). Combine mixture, then place two cotton balls in the mixture. When the cotton balls are soaked, insert one loosely into each nostril for five minutes. The garlic has powerful antibacterial properties to fight nasal and sinus infection, honey is also an antibacterial and astringent which works to loosen and remove mucus and the Aloe moisturizes and soothes dry, inflamed nasal tissue.

Hungarian Home Remedy for Upset Stomach

Sip a cup of warm chamomile tea. In one hour, sip a cup of warm peppermint tea. Continue alternating the tea flavor every hour on the hour until the digestive issue has resolved itself. The active ingredient in chamomile tea relaxes stomach muscles to stop cramping and intestinal spasms while the peppermint tea contains a natural pain killer.

Latin American Home Remedy for Muscle Aches

Cayenne is the choice from Latin America to add spicy flavor to recipes and to sooth sore muscles. Cayenne contains capsaicin , a proven ingredient in the relief of minor muscle aches and pains. Apply capsaicin cream directly to aching muscles or take capsaicin capsules for relief.

Home Remedies for Minor Burns from Mexico and New Zealand

A favorite Mexican home remedy for minor burns is a mashed tomato. Apply a mashed tomato directly to the burn and cover with a bandage. The tomato contains vitamin A and C, plus phytonutrients, all of which work together to promote wound healing while the mashed tomato cools and soothes the burning skin.

New Zealanders prefer to spread honey on their minor burns twice a day to promote wound healing. Honey for burns has long been a favorite southern home remedy for minor burns too. The honey soothes and cools skin while the antibacterial properties prevent infection and promote healing.
