Home Remedies for Bronchitis

V. L. Hamlin
There are little gremlins beating away at their drums inside your head, definitely a waterfall inside your nose and you are absolutely sure that someone (a really big someone) is standing on your chest, just below the collarbone. It sounds like you might have bronchitis!

"Bronchitis is defined as inflammation of the bronchi, which are the main air passages to the lungs. Acute bronchitis is often caused by the same viruses that cause colds."

Symptoms include:

Sore Throat

Runny Nose

Sinus Infection

Cough

Rather than rush for antibiotics, try out some of these home remedies!

Water ~ The most important ingredient to getting well! Drink a lot of water, at least 8 - 10 glasses each day.

Slippery Elm ~ Mix one teaspoon with a warm glass of water and sip slowly. Slippery Elm helps soothe sore throat and the inflammation of the bronchi.

Turmeric Powder ~ half a teaspoon mixed with a half a glass of milk, drink two to three times daily. This turmeric mixture works best when taken on an empty stomach.

Ginger ~ Mix a half of one teaspoon of each of the following: ginger, black pepper and cloves, into a glass of water three times daily.

Honey ~ Take a spoonful of honey each night before bed and you won't be up all night coughing! "Research has shown that unlike most other sweeteners, honey contains small amounts of a wide array of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants."

Onion ~ Take one teaspoon of raw onion juice first thing in the morning, it helps liquefy phlegm and prevents further development.

Garlic ~ Chop up one clove of garlic and swallow, three times daily. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and contains many vitamins and antioxidants.

Old Time Remedy - Chop onions or garlic, mix with olive oil and rub on the soles of your feet, cover with socks and go to bed. You'll feel great in the morning!

Almonds ~ These little nuts are known for their healing powers in many illnesses but especially in respiratory illness. Eat them any way you want them!

This is only a small list of the huge variety of herbs and natural food items than can help in the treatment of bronchitis. Take some time, search the internet or pick up an alternative medicine book from your local library to learn more! Be sure to consult a medical professional before trying any home remedies, as they may not be safe for everyone!
