How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Canker Sores

Sharon Morris
Canker sores are mouth sores also known as aphthous ulcers. They are not only painful but annoying too. Canker sores are a type of mouth sore that can interfere with usual oral activities such as eating and drinking. Salty foods are the most common things to irritate a canker sore.

There are different things that can cause canker sores. These include a low immune system, a mouth trauma such as eating something too hot and burning your mouth, stress, allergies to certain foods, and vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin deficiencies include vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, and Vitamin C.

There are things a person suffering from canker sores can do from home to treat them and ease the pain and irritation.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Baking Soda

Baking soda, like vinegar, works as a great home remedy for a lot of things. There are two ways to use baking soda as a home remedy for canker sores. You can either mix it with water and make a paste to apply it directly to the canker sore or you can mix it with water and use it as a mouth rinse to ease the pain from canker sores and to get rid of them altogether.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is a good canker sore healer. Drink it in between meals to get rid of canker sores and to relieve the pain from them.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Salt, Baking Soda, and Hydrogen Peroxide Mouth Rinse

You can make a mouth rinse with salt, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide to help heal and ease canker sores. Just mix together one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of baking soda, and two ounces of hydrogen peroxide. Use this mouth rinse four times a day to get rid of canker sores and ease the pain from them. If the taste is too strong or if the tingle is too uncomfortable, add in two ounces of water.

You can also make a regular salt water mouth rinse to get rid of the canker sores and to ease the pain. If you are brave enough, you can add salt directly to the mouth wound but be careful if you do this because it may burn a little.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Tea

The tannic acid in tea will help dry out a canker sore and get rid of it. Just wet a regular tea bag and apply it directly to the canker sore.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Ice

Ice won't get rid of the canker sore but it will help ease the discomfort from it. Apply ice directly to the canker sore or rinse your mouth with ice water.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a property that temporarily desensitizes the nerves that cause pain. Some candy recipes have cayenne pepper in them and is designed to relieve the pain from canker sores. These types of candy are used to relieve mouth sores caused by radiation and chemotherapy too. Be careful though because cayenne pepper can be irritating to some people.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Sage

Sage can be used to relieve the pain from canker sores. Add three teaspoons of sage leaves to one pint of boiling water and steep, while covered, for 15 minutes. Use this to rinse your mouth several times a day or apply sage leaves directly to the canker sore.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Vitamins

As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, a vitamin deficiency can cause canker sores. Make sure you are getting enough vitamins by speaking with your doctor.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Minerals

A mineral deficiency can also cause canker sores. Speak to your doctor to make sure you are getting enough minerals in your diet.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores: Aloe

Aloe is a good healing plant for a lot of different ailments. Just a little aloe juice from the inner portion of an aloe leaf rinsed over the canker sore can help relieve the pain and get rid of canker sores completely.

Canker sores are painful and irritating but using the home remedies in this article can help you deal with them fast, and effectively.
