Home Remedies for a Chalazion

Lehticia Leo
A chalazion can be a painful and worrisome condition to encounter. I know, because it landed me in the hospital emergency room. While being discharged from the hospital, the doctor gave me a sheet that included several home remedies that will help speed up the healing process of my pesky chalazion. Below, are the remedies that were noted on the sheet.

Baby Shampoo

When trying to remedy a chalazion, an effective chalazion treatment is baby shampoo. Rinse the eyelashes and the lid margin thoroughly with warm water and apply a small amount of baby shampoo onto a cotton ball. While the eyelashes are still wet, gently rub the cotton ball along the edge of the base of the eyelashes and rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove excess baby shampoo. This chalazion treatment should be done once per day for a two week time period in order to see effective results.

Warm Compress

Apply a warm compress to treat your chalazion. A warm compress can be picked up at most drugstores, pharmacies and other medical retailers. However, if you do not have access to a warm compress, you can create one at home using a warm towel. Place a hand towel under hot running water, then wring out. Apply the warm compress to the eyes for approximately 10 minutes three to four times each day. Immediately after applying the warm compress to your chalazion, stimulate the affected area by massaging the eye. Massage in an upward and downward motion.

Herbal Tea

Herbal tea can effectively treat your chalazion. Start by brewing a teabag regularly in hot water. Then, remove excess water from the tea bag by squeezing it until the teabag is no longer dripping liquid. Lie down or tilt your head back, and apply the teabag to the chalazion and let rest for 10 minutes or until the teabag turns cold. Repeat this process one to two times per day for two weeks or until the chalazion is gone.

No Makeup

This one is more of a tip rather than a home remedy. While in the emergency room, the nurse recommended that I stay away from eye makeup. She also said that I should discard of all the eye makeup that I've worn within the last two months. Since I've had the chalazion for a month and a half it only makes sense to throw away the eye makeup I've worn since I've had my chalazion. Forgoing eye makeup may be tough for many women. But, it can make a world of a difference for curing and preventing the formation of a new chalazion.
