Just as in cats, fleas cause walking dandruff. Daily grooming is a must. This will remove the dandruff and loose hair from your dog's coat. This also stimulates blood circulation to the skin.
While you are brushing your dog, look for dry patches on the skin. Use this tea recipe to treat these dry patches. Boil a cup of water. Place two Thyme tea bags in the water. Wait for the water to cool to room temperature and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray this solution onto the dry patches.
You can also use olive oil on your dog's dry patches. Put the oil onto your hands and rub it into his fur, making sure that you are touching his skin.
Make sure your dog is getting enough oil in his diet. For every fifteen pounds your dog weighs, add one teaspoon of olive oil into his food. Fish oil is also great for moisturizing you dog's skin. This can be bought in pill or liquid form. You can either give it to your dog orally or apply the liquid directly to the skin.
You can also purchase Calendula extract from your local health food store. You can either apply it to the dry patches or comb it through your dog's entire coat. This has antibacterial properties and is excellent for fighting infection. Tea tree oil is also excellent to use for infection.
When you bathe your dog, grind up one cup of oatmeal in a blender or coffee grinder and add it to the water. Make sure that the bath water is not too hot or too cold. The rule of thumb is if the temperature of the water is uncomfortable for you, it will be uncomfortable for your dog as well. You can even buy oatmeal shampoo from your local pet store.
If you also have dry itchy skin, the problem may be that the air in your house may be too dry. You need to increase the humidity by using a humidifier or vaporizer.
Finally, if fleas are the culprit of your dog's dry itchy skin and you are tired of giving him flea baths, a small change in the diet will do wonders. Your dog may even lick his lips when you do this. All you have to do is add some garlic to his food. You can either cut up a clove or buy it in liquid or capsule form. Garlic is an excellent flea repellent. It makes you wonder if they are related to vampires.
