Home Remedies for an Earlobe Cyst

How to Treat Sebaceous Cyst at Home

Nina Rotz
Sebaceous cyst, also known as earlobe cyst, that appears on the earlobes is noncancerous but can be painful. Blocked sebaceous glands or swollen hair follicles are common causes of ear cysts, which fill with oil and a fatty, white, semisolid material called sebum. Sebaceous cysts can be medically referred to as tumors but are benign.

An earlobe cyst can become infected if you try to poke it with a needle. Swelling and pussy discharge can indicate an infection, requiring a doctor's visit. Don't pop an earlobe cyst; instead, try a home remedy to safely get rid of it.

Tea Tree Oil Earlobe Cyst Remedy

Tea tree oil can dry out fluids that form the cyst, thus helping the cyst disappear. You can find it in health stores and from online retailers. Pour two drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton ball, and place the cotton ball against the ear lobe cyst. Hold it on your cyst for five minutes, and wash the area off with an oil-free facial cleanser. Repeat the application daily until the cyst fluids have dried up.

Hot Washcloth Remedy

A hot washcloth compress works to melt the sebum, which can then be reabsorbed into the body. Soak a washcloth in a stream of hot water. Wring out the excess water, making sure the washcloth is warm to the touch but not dripping. Place the washcloth against the cyst and leave it there for 15 minutes, allowing hot water to penetrate and soften up the cyst. This will help the fluid and oils inside the cyst to drain, causing it to disappear. Avoid fatty and oily foods while applying a hot compress, in order for sebum to actually be absorbed back into the body as a fatty liquid.

Clay Mask Home Treatment

Clay masks, such as those available in the drugstore beauty aisle, dry out the cyst and the oils inside of it. They can soften the sebum and normalize the sebaceous oil glands. Dab a small amount of the mask onto your ear lobe cyst, leaving it on overnight and rinsing it off in the morning. Repeat this treatment every night until the cyst disappears.

Medical Treatment

Wax impaction in the ear is a possibility if the cyst occurs within the ear canal. Medical treatment would be required if an infection exists. An earlobe cyst infection is treated with antibiotics or removal of the cyst. Surgical removal is required if severely painful or interferes with hearing.
