Home Remedies for Food Intolerance

Lois Ryan
We all need food to stay alive and be healthy. Whether it is bacon and eggs, pizza or lobster, we look forward to eating a delicious meal. However, some of us may not be able to enjoy the foods we eat because of food intolerance.

When you eat specific foods and your digestive system can not digest it, you have food intolerance to that food. Though this is not like having an allergy to a specific food where you can have life-threatening health problems just by accidently eating the wrong food, food intolerance can still disrupt your daily routine. When your body gets food that it cannot digest, it rejects the food. Sometimes you vomit the food back up. Other times you have diarrhea. The best way to avoid the symptoms of food intolerance is to find out, and avoid, which foods you are intolerant to.

The first thing is to understand what types of food cause food intolerance. Lactose is the number one culprit. Many foods contain dairy products such as milk, cheese and even bakery products that use milk as a main ingredient. Artificial colors and flavors and food additives such as benzoic acid also cause food intolerance.

If you suspect that you are intolerant to a food but are not sure which one, keep a food diary. For a few days consume mostly fruits and vegetables. If you do not see any signs of food intolerance, starting adding new food into the diet one at a time. Keep adding foods every three days until you find out which one you are intolerant to. When you find the culprit, remove the food from the diet and see if the symptoms disappear. Then add it back into your diet and see if the symptoms come back. Once you find out which food you are intolerant to, eliminate it from your diet. Most food intolerance symptoms disappear when you avoid the following foods:

1. Baked goods that contains eggs and milk

2. Dairy Products

3. Foods with artificial colors and flavors

4. If you have gluten intolerance, avoid toast sandwiches, pizza, pies and cake

5. Peanuts

While avoidance is the best remedy, you may not want to give up a food. It may be your favorite dessert such as cheesecake. There are several home remedies you can try that can help alleviate the symptoms of food intolerance.

1. Put five drops of castor oil in a half of a cup of fruit

2. Eat a banana

3. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will help your digestive system

4. Drink tea with ginger

5. Add lime juice and a teaspoon of honey to a glass of water. Drink this with your dinner.

6. Drink chamomile or Fennel tea.

7. Take vitamin B5 and E. These are both powerful antioxidants that help fight the symptoms of food intolerance.

8. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water and drink it before you go to bed.

While no single diet will work for everybody because we are sensitive to foods in different ways, these little suggestions will make your life easier. You may be tolerant to certain foods. However, do not let food intolerance rule you life.
