Home Remedies to Help Those with Arthritis

Arthritis is a debilitating disease that can bring down the strongest among us. Arthritis simply means inflammation of the joints. While the definition is simple, the cure is not, as there really is no cure. This is not a disease that allows a quick surgical fix.

Many drugs that are on the market are designed to relieve the symptoms associated with arthritis. But recent news has revealed that some of these drugs lead to other serious complications such as heart failure.

There are a few home remedies that arthritis sufferers can try to use to help with their pain and discomfort.

The most important home remedy, as recommended by doctors and patients alike, is exercise. Exercise is recommended for a variety of reasons. Strengthening the muscles surrounding the affected joint is one great reason. Another great reason for exercise is that aerobic exercise helps strengthen the bones as well as tone the muscles. Be sure not to overexert during exercise; too much of a good thing can bring unwanted pain.

Taking a warm bath or shower can bring relief to those aching joints. If taking a bath, use the opportunity to try some simple exercises. The warmth of the water may allow movements that are otherwise painful.

Being overweight can place additional stress on the joints. Going on a well-balanced diet and losing weight can help relieve this extra stress and reduce the pain.

One remedy that is beginning to take hold in medical circles is the use of fish oil supplement. Fish oil supplement reduces inflammation at the cellular level. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil also prevents other fatty acids that cause the inflammation from reaching the joints. Be careful with fish oil supplements though, some that are not pharmaceutical grade contain high levels of toxins, particularly mercury. Expect one to two weeks of taking fish oil supplement before seeing significant results.

Spicy foods that contain cayenne pepper have been proven to reduce pain and inflammation. The cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, the active ingredient that is responsible for the pain and inflammation relief.

People that suffer from arthritis live with pain every day. While there are no real cures, there are many avenues of relief that can be traveled. Many drugs are available, but sometimes their safety is not proven before being released to the public. A combination of these home remedies along with professional advice from a doctor can create a situation where the pain is not unbearable.
