Home Remedies for Hypertension & Erectile Dysfunction

ROBIN REICHERT
Although hypertension (high blood pressure) is not the only reason for erectile dysfunction (ED), it has been found that a high proportion of men with ED also have hypertension, according to the International Journal of Impotence Research. Hypertension, a silent killer, tends to cause few symptoms and many people don't even know that they have it. A blood pressure reading of 140 over 90 is considered hypertension. ED is often one of the ways that people find out they have hypertension. Fortunately, there are many alternative medicines that can help with ED and hypertension.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is defined as when you have difficulty getting and keeping an erection, which interferes with your ability to have sex and also can include difficulties with ejaculation. It is common in men over the age of 65, but also at earlier ages. Other causes of ED may include psychological issues as well as lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol, obesity, diabetes, and anything that affects the blood supply to the penis. People who suffer from ED can experience a host of symptoms from depression to low self esteem.

Asian Ginseng

There are many varieties of ginseng such as Asian, Korean or Chinese, as well as Canadian and American varieties, and they all seem to have slightly different beneficial properties. According to a study available in the Journal of Urology, Panax ginseng (Korean red ginseng) has shown promising results for men dealing with sexual complications due to the lack of ability to attain an erection(2002;168:2070-3). Use Asian ginseng, also called Korean red ginseng, for ED and hypertension to improve circulation as well as the immune system. Take ginseng as an extract in the amount of 200 mg once per day.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is rich in terpenoids and flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that strengthen the heart, blood vessels, and nerves. Terpenoids are primarly responsible for improving the flow of blood, particularly in your genital area. This herb also increases the flow of blood to your brain, which may aid memory function. Take 40 to 80 mg each day, three times per day for a minimum of 12 weeks.

Arginine

Arginine, in the form of L-arginine, is an amino acid that helps to produce nitric oxide, which is helpful for blood vessels and for blood flow. It is naturally produced in your kidneys and your liver. For erectile dysfunction, take 5 mg of l-arginine one time per day to increase circulation to your penis and to help maintain an erection.

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice has long been known for its ability to improve heart health. It's a natural blood thinner that not only promotes good blood flow to the heart, but also helps to remove plaque from the arteries. It is also a powerful antioxidant, and it may improve the health and mobility of sperm to help you have and maintain an erection. In fact, according to the International Journal of Impotence Research, a pilot study conducted in late 2007 found that pomegranate juice showed positive results for dealing with erectile dysfunction. Drink an 8 oz glass of pomegranate juice each day. To consume in tablet or capsule form, either buy it in your local natural health store or use the extract from pomegranates to make capsules and tablets. Try to take pomegranate juice in its most natural form if at all possible.

Caution

Consult your doctor before starting any alternative treatments. Alternative medicines can interact with other supplements, herbs, over the counter, and prescription drugs.
