Home Remedies for Jock Itch

The real medical term for jock itch is also known as Tinea Cruris. Similar to ringworm, it is a fungus that causes a red rash on the skin. Since this is an infection, itching causes the rash to spread and open sores to appear. It can be spread from person to person just by making contact with the skin. Even though this is considered to be a minor medical condition, it can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Jock itch affects both men and women, epically those involved in athletics. While this fungal infection can be found on any part of the body, most victims get it on the groin or inner thigh.

If you suspect that you have jock itch and are too embarrassed to make that call to the doctor's office, there are several home remedies that you can do. They are effective if relieving the itching and fighting the infection.
Garlic and onion have anti-fungal, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Make a paste with either or a combination of both and put some on the infected area. After you shower, you will have to repeat the treatment.

Use tea tree oil on the infected area. This will get rid of the itch and reduce the inflammation. If you do this treatment on a regular basis, the fungus will be killed. You can buy tea tree oil as an extract from a health food store. If you have soap or shampoo containing this, you can use these for effective results.

Apply cornstarch daily to the affected areas. Even when the itching, inflammation and swelling disappear, continue treating the area for two to three days to make sue the infection is gone.

Use diaper ointments such as Balmex and Desitin on the affected areas. Also creams for yeast infections, such as Monistat works just as well.

After you shower, pat the area dry. Add baby powder to the rash.
If you like taking baths, add a cup of baking soda to the water. You can also use Epsom salts, bath salts, or iodized salt from your local grocery store.

The best home remedy for jock itch is prevention. You do this by:

1. Keeping the groin area dry and clean

2. Wearing cotton underwear

3. Weaning clean clothes every day

4. Washing towels after using them

5. Never sharing towels with other people

6. Drinking plenty of water

7. Having enough vegetables in your diet

8. Including garlic and onion in your diet

The next time when you or somebody you know gets jock itch, remember the above remedies. In most cases, the symptoms will disappear within a few days. However, if the symptoms continue, see your doctor. The redness and itchiness may be the sign of another medical problem.
