Home Remedies for Relief of the Common Cold

Teresa Hoyt
There is no cure for a cold. We all get a cold from time to time and feeling rotten is pretty much the main symptom. Home Remedies that provide comfort and ease your cold symptoms may be all you can do other than wait for the cold to pass.

Chicken soup may not be a scientific home remedy but it can make you feel better. Chicken soup provides cold symptom relief by clearing your congestion and making you breathe easier. Chicken soup provides nourishment and hydration both of which are much needed when you are suffering from a cold. If chicken soup is a home remedy for a cold in your family, just the association will provide comfort for you when you are not feeling well.

Vitamins, especially when taken at the first signs of a cold, are thought to ease the severity of a cold and maybe prevent it all together. Vitamin C and Zinc, taken together are a defense against an oncoming cold. Again, medical evidence does not support this home remedy, but millions of people take this combination to fend off cold symptoms and believe it works.

Stay hydrated by drinking constantly. Sorry to get your hopes up, not alcohol. Water, herbal tea, orange juice and any liquid that makes you feel better will help you avoid dehydration. Even a Popsicle can help if you feel like having one. Try a slurpee or icee to ease a sore throat.

Rest is the real home remedy for the common cold and it is one remedy that is rarely used. If you can take time out to rest you will feel better or at least not feel any worse. Bed rest and isolation from family and coworkers could be very helpful not only to you, but to others. You won't spread cold germs so rapidly when resting at home and this is the best thing to do for all concerned if you can possibly manage it.

If your cold does not begin to subside in a few days it may not be a common cold. Go to the doctor if you suspect something more serious. Trying a few home remedies as comfort measures for relief of the common cold is a great idea, but if you have a fever, chills, aches or extreme fatigue let the doctor check you out. In this day and age, distinguishing between the cold and the flu is very important and if there is any doubt whatsoever it important that you seek medical attention.
