Precautions Regarding Headaches and Home Remedies
If you are suffering from an excruciatingly painful headache unlike any other you've ever experienced, seek medical care immediately. These home remedies are intended for stress or tension headaches, and not headaches brought on by medical conditions or mingraines. When in doubt, seek the advice of a medical professional.
Hot Water Home Remedy
Decades ago, a doctor gave my father this bit of advice. When experiencing a stress or tension headache, fill a sink with the hottest water you can stand, and place your hands in the water. As the water cools, replace it with additional hot water. Keep your hands in the hot water for several minutes.
I have personally used this quick and easy home headache remedy for years, and most of the time it works for me. The theory is, blood rushes to the hands and away from the head, thus relieving the headache.
Caffeine Withdrawals?
Those who regularly enjoy drinks containing caffeine understand caffeine withdrawals. I must admit I'm one of those people. I can't function until I have my first daily dose of caffeine, and when I go without, I feel weak and very tired. I also acquire a dull headache that radiates down from the top of my head.
One time in particular I remember feeling exceptionally tired, but initially I didn't realize why. When my head began to hurt, I figured out the problem. I was drinking root beer instead of my usual soft drink that contained caffeine.
If you seem to have a stress headache and feel more tired than usual, maybe you have a caffeine addiction. For a quick fix, brew yourself a strong cup of coffee, or have a soft drink containing caffeine. Take the recommended dose of your usual pain reliever, and within the half-hour, your headache should be gone.
For even faster pain relief, combine your dose of caffeine and pain reliever with the abovementioned hot water treatment. Your pain will gradually diminish, and you'll be ready to conquer the world once again.
Are You Dehydrated?
Dehydration can cause headaches, so if your head is pounding and you haven't taken in many liquids, along with trying the other abovementioned home remedies, have a big glass of water or a sports drink while relaxing. Besides containing water, sports drinks contain valuable electrolytes that can also help combat stress headaches brought on by tension and dehydration.
