Home Remedies that Work

Coughs

Most of us with children have gone through the chronic night cough which cough medicines don't seem to help any and we are in constant worry of recalls and what it is actually doing to our children whether it's prescribed or over the counter. Next cold and flu season, try this off the wall, hard to believe trick. Rub a generous amount of Vicks Vapor rub on the patient's feet and cover with socks, before you reach for that cough syrup. This remedy is for all ages. For a daytime cough, purchase fresh ginger, break it up a bit, bring it to a boil, simmer for 30 minutes, and sip throughout the day with or without honey & lemon. The honey and lemon have added benefits though.

Burns

We've heard of mayonnaise, butter, ice, etc. I found a strange one during a search one day saying to put vinegar on a burn. In my head, I thought that would make it worse, until one day the oven door started to close as my arm was still in the oven. I grabbed the Braggs apple cider vinegar that was in my fridge and poured it on the burn. Amazingly no more pain. Another time while frying pork, one shot out of the pan as I was turning them and splattered grease all up my forearm. I did the vinegar again. It took several applications for that one, but the pain did finally stop. It was a bad burn, the kind that would have normally burned for hours with the cold water method.

Whiter Teeth

Rinse your mouth with peroxide just like you would use a mouthwash. Brush your teeth with baking soda then follow with your toothpaste. I like to add Arm & Hammer's whitening boost as well. This method has the same results as whitening strips but is time saving, cheaper, and gentler on your teeth.

Dry Skin/ Best Moisturizer

Do you want a moisturizer that needs only one application per day (not including hands because we wash them throughout the day)? My answer is almond oil or grape seed oil. Both absorb well into the skin and do not stain your clothes. They also do not clog the pores. An added bonus would be that now you have a moisturizer that will not interfere with your perfume scent.

Calloused Feet

Vaseline petroleum jelly applied to your feet every night and covered with socks will give you softer feet. A once a week filing will remove dead scaly skin. I like the Ped-Egg.

  • Whiter teeth naturally
  • Moisturize naturally
We spend more money than we should trying to find products that work when the fact is, all the companies that produce them use natural products and add potentially harmful products to them. Go natural, it's safer.

Actually by using vinegar you not only have the same or better benefits of cold water (which I still feel the burn even after 20 minutes of running water) you also save water. Think of the gallons of water going down the drain. If you are persistent that cold water is the best, then at least put the cold water in a bowl or pan and add ice to it to keep the cold or even use a child's boo pack that is left in the freezer or even a bag of peas. Whatever method you use, please just don't run a faucet for 20 minutes.

Never use fats on a fresh burn. Ever.
You need to remove excess heat from the area asap, so vinegar probably helps by facilitating the removal of any hot fat residues left by contact, but lots of cold running water (20 minutes) is best for a nasty burn. It may take a while, but it can really help to prevent scarring and reduce pain.

Thanks for the tips. Will definitely have to remember to try vinegar on my next burn.
