There is one thing that all cat owners dread someone walking into their house and curling up their nose and going "What is that smell?" Weather it be your cat box or the fact that your loveable fur ball has decided to have an accident on your brand new rug cat smell is not only embarrassing but also difficult to get rid of. However, it is not impossible there are some simple and effective tips and tricks that you can employ to keep your house smelling good and not having to evict fluffy.

"The first thing any cat owner needs to do is make sure that your cat boxes are very clean.," says Persian Breeder Christy of AZ. Felines are notoriously very finicky about cleanliness spending a great deal of time per day cleaning themselves, so why would they want to use a dirty litter box? If their usual toilet is not up to their high standards, they will find a new place weather it is your brand new carpet or maybe your shoes. In addition once they have decided to use a place other than their litter box repeat offense can be a problem, "If you do not clean an accident spot thoroughly you run the risk of them continuing to use the spot. If a cat can detect any bit of their own urine smell, they will associate the spot with it being okay to use. Even if you say no." Christy wisely tells me. So what exactly can you do to eliminate the problem smell?

"A home remedy is one of the most effective and economical of your choices." Christy tells me again. While the pet stores offer a white variety of urine buster products that are known to get some results they can be pricey. The first thing you want to do with any accident is to blot up as much of the urine as you can with rags or paper towels, do not rub you will only get the smell farther into the carpeting. You will than want to make a combination that is three parts water and 1 part vinegar and completely saturate the area. To dry the area you will again employ the blotting method. The next step is to sprinkle baking soda on the area. Than proceed to ¾ cup of hydrogen peroxide and tsp dawn dish detergent. "Make sure you test the peroxide mixture on a small area of your carpet first to make sure you do not get any discoloring" expert Christy reminds. Once you have placed the peroxide and dish detergent mixture over the baking soda use a stiff bristled scrub brush to work the baking soda into the carpet well. Allow the mixture to dry than vacuum it up as you would a carpet refresher. If you still detect any urine odor, repeat the process.

"Laundry can be a whole different monster if your cat decides to pee on your clothes." Christy comments but says not to be dismayed there is a simple and often over looked remedy for getting the smell out of your clothes. Fill your washer with the smelly urine soiled clothing and add ¼ of a cup of Apple Cider vinegar with your detergent. That should do the trick like the home remedy for carpet however if you still smell some of the urine after the first wash repeat the cycle with the Apple Cider Vinegar.

While drying to deal with the problems of cat urine smell can be frustrating, you should not let it get you down. With a little bit of elbow grease and some relatively simple applications of common household items you and your cat can come to a happy agreement of no smell. "Try to remember that even though they have made a mess you have to clean up you do love your cat." Christy tells me with a little laugh as her final tip. A sentiment I think that all cat owners will agree with.
