If there's one thing that I know about people, it's the fact that they like to get the best product at the lowest prices. If you really want to make people happy in the remodeling business, you need to find the cheapest contractors who provide the homeowners with the greatest value.

In other words, if a home remodeling project cost $20,000 from contractor A, and contractor B is going to charge $15,000 for the same service, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one of these contractors the homeowner is going to be using. This doesn't work all of the time and will make some homeowners extremely unhappy, if the project doesn't turn out as they envisioned it.

How can you get the best of both worlds? How can you find the lowest prices and know for a fact that you're not overpaying your contractor? These are some of the toughest questions that are asked by homeowners and there really isn't an easy solution.

There might not be one the easy solution, but I think that I can help homeowners solve one of their problems. Listen to what I'm about to say and if you need to, read this over and over again, until you have it embedded in your thick skull.

You have got to compare apples to apples. Make sure that each contractor gives you an itemized contract and has each part of the job listed with the materials that they will be using. If contractor B hands you a one-page contract for a room addition, ask for more information.

If you don't have enough information from either contractor, ask for more. One of the biggest problems that creates unhappy homeowners is paying for anything that doesn't provide value for them in the future. People comparison shop for refrigerators, washers and dryers, bathtubs, cars, homes, but don't think about comparison shopping with contractors.

Explain to your contractors, that you will only accept an itemized contract listing materials and labor expenses. Don't be afraid to ask your contractors for more information about the products that they will be using.
