Home School Math Activity: Math Bingo

Antoinette McGowan
Math can be a very grueling subject for most kids. However there are ways that you can make learning math fun for your child. One such way is by playing math bingo that engages your children while they hone their math skills. Math bingo is simple and not time consuming to put together. The play time, however could take awhile. But when you are having fun it will seem the time just flies right on by. Just a few simple everyday supplies and you are on your way to playing this super fun math game.

What You Need:

White construction paper

Black Marker

Colored Markers

Scissors

You will first need to create some math problems in list style on a piece of paper for you to use. Another way that you can do this is to cut up each problem and place them in a bowl to draw out. Secondly create bingo cards for each child to use. Place one answer in each square so that it resembles a bingo card. Create the cards using the black marker.

To play the game give each child a colored marker so that they can mark the appropriate squares. You read off the math problem and each child looks on their card for their answer and then marks that square. The child who gets five across, down or diagonal gets to call bingo. Check the card of the one that calls bingo and if it is correct then start another round of math bingo. For the next round give each child a new card and play the same way but with new math problems.

This game can be made to fit any grade by just creating math problems that fit with what your children are already learning. For lower elementary grades use simple addition and subtraction problems, upper elementary and middle school grades use more complicated multiplication and division problems. Algebra and geometry problems can make this game engaging for high school students.

Rewards help to make this game even better. Rewards can be a couple pieces of that coveted candy that all children love. The reward does not have to be anything to eat though it can be the one who calls bingo get out of an assigned household chore. Another reward could be the one to call bingo gets to pick a movie for the family to watch from some preapproved movies.
