Home School Vs. Public School

Weighing Out the Options

Skyler Raine
Every parent wants to give the best to their children. As the saying goes, giving your child education is probably the best inheritance you can give them. Home school is an option that is becoming very popular among parents who cannot afford to send their children to private school yet are afraid of the security and safety risks that are present in public schools.

Home schooling is not really different compared to attending a regular school. The same subjects are taken and the only difference is that the learning happens at home and not in the typical classroom setting. Both home school and a public school have its own advantages and disadvantages and deciding on which school to place your child in can be quite a decision to make. Here are some tips to help you decide.

A public school offers advantages such as extra-curricular activities, the opportunity to learn with others and complete tasks as a group, and the opportunity to make friends.

Home school on the other hand can be a bit more expensive compared to going to a public school. Interactions with other students are very limited or even none to some extent, and some colleges and universities have a strict policy against home school learners.

Getting your child into home school allows you and your child the freedom to choose the curriculum or the subjects that need to be taken. You and your child can also work out a schedule to take the online classes in, so that you can supervise your child's home school learning, which also teaches your child the value of independence, especially in terms of deciding what they want to learn. Also, online instructors and students are usually at a very low ratio.

A public school usually has a high teacher to student ratio, making it impossible for a teacher to monitor each and every student's learning and development. Your child also has to adhere to whatever schedule the school follows and you have to adjust to this schedule, not the other way around. Also, your child is exposed to the risks of being bullied by other schoolmates or worse, unfortunate incidents like shootings and other hate-related events that we have all seen in the news.

Regardless of what you as a parent decide, what is important is that you have a clear understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling your child in home school or a public school. Also, prepare yourself and your child for the consequences of choosing one school over the other. After all, what you're after for is the best education your child can get, right?

I had my son in home schooling for a while. But I quickly found that I was too undisciplined to handle it. So, he has been thriving very well in school ever since.
