Home Schooling Your Children: How is that Possible?

Kim Howard
Home schooling is a kind of do it yourself type of education. One of the first questions asked by parents is, how? These days, parents are very busy with jobs and providing a living for their families. Making time for quality, at home education can be a very tough challenge for parents, especially single parents who feel their time is stretched thin already. What can they do?

Fortunately for parents of home schooled children, there are many options available to them. There are over a million children who are home schooled every year, so there are evidently many parents who found ways of making it work. There are as many ways as individual as the parents themselves.

In traditional, two parent homes, the choice is usually easy; one parent works while the other stays home in order to provide the home schooling. Many parents choose to educate their children in this way due to a frustration with the public school system being unable to provide a satisfactory academic and value driven education for their children.

Since the 1960's, the traditional arrangement of a male breadwinner and a female care giver has changed to encompass broader roles in today's society. With role reversals, same sex couples and extended families now being more in the mainstream of society, there are more alternatives that can be used in home schooling children and provide the best possible education.

Despite the arrangement, whether traditional two parent, single parent, same sex parent or otherwise, many families invite older or extended relatives to the home to aid in the child's education. This is an arrangement that calls up an age old custom of the older and wiser giving education to the younger in exchange for living arrangements. These older friends and relatives can be excellent providers of wisdom and knowledge for home schooled children.

Since enough time has passed by, there is the possibility of second generation education; where those who were home schooled themselves go ahead and home school their own children.

Some of those who have had a public education can provide valuable education and knowledge on what not to do, but there is only so much that this can convey. There must be a positive aspect to the knowledge that is given, and public schooled educators can fall back only on what they know.

Many mothers who are stay at home moms can provide home schooling to neighboring children and provide day care services as well since they can supervise more than one child at a time. The option of providing a tutor is a method that dates back to Alexander the Great, and it is not necessary to have great wealth in order to provide a tutor like it was in those early days. Tutoring has become a viable option for many busy parents.

Throughout other countries in many other periods of history, using tutors as the primary method of education has been utilized. The public school system, which was modeled after the nineteenth century Prussian system, is a relatively new method that has not seen the success as it wished to have.

There are many different ages and backgrounds that tutors can come from, while some are even specialists in particular areas such as languages, music or science. Many tutors have a public school system background and have grown dissatisfied or disillusioned, but still retain a love of teaching.

While many parents believe that tutors are unaffordable and that a parent's time could be better spent with other things like a home business, the quality of their children's education is still important, and a tutor can provide the primary education while the parent can remain at home to focus on the child and still be able to devote time to a home business.

Some parents have children that are a lot easier to home school because of their independence or self motivation. These students can generally teach themselves with little guidance or resources, which makes tutors a less expensive or unnecessary approach to education. These self motivated students often find themselves in the top of their college courses because of their self generated love for education and learning.

Parents should be sure to explore all options available to them before deciding that home schooling may not be a viable option for them.
