Home Schooling and Your Child's Socialization

Michael Bridges
The one question that home schooling parents are asked most often is, are they worried that their home schoolers won't get enough socialization? After all socialization is one of the things a child has to have in order to get along in this world. Socialization, although not part of the curriculum, is something that comes naturally in public and private schools. Socialization is how friendships are formed. If a child doesn't learn how to socialize at an early age that child could possibly grow up to be a social outcast or a loner. It is harder for this type of person to make it in business, in relationships and other forms of social situations.

So how is a child that is home schooled supposed to get the socialization that he or she needs if there's no one around to socialize with? Well, the truth of the matter is that there are many ways that home schooled children can get the socialization they need and it's up to you the home schooling parent to be aware of them. There are all kinds of activities kids can do outside of the home after their home schooling that will put them in social situations.

Some of these social situations are going to a recreation center. Recreation centers have all kinds of activities that kids can do that involve interaction with each other. Parties are always a good chance for your kids to socialize, whether you take them to the parties or give the parties yourself. Participating in sports is a good way for your kids to socialize, make friends and learn other qualities that they will need in life.

Church activities like Bible school, singing in the choir and church outings are opportunities for your home schooler to socialize. How about enrolling your child in activities such as karate school, swimming classes, art classes, dance classes, etc. In my opinion the best way for home-schooled children to socialize is just going outside and playing with other neighborhood children, this activity alone can make long lasting friendships.

Learning math, science, reading, writing and other academic lessons is very important, but they don't make your child a whole person. In order to raise a well-rounded human being, socialization has to be part of the curriculum. Ultimately it is up to you, the home schooling parent that is responsible to see that the your home schoolers get the socialization that they need.
