Home Treatments for Gingivitis

Common Home Remedies for Easing Gum Inflammation

E. Hignutt
Gingivitis is the proper term for the condition where your gums bleed when you eat or brush your teeth. This is not a new condition; in fact, it is estimated that at some point in their life, every one has had gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to tooth inflammation and mouth infections and sores.

While numerous home remedies exist, one of the easiest ones is to gargle with a saline solution. Mix a pinch or two of salt with a glass of warm water; stir and gargle.

Clove oil is another home remedy; instead of gargling just use a finger to apply directly to your gums.

Brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush removes more plaque, which is what the bacteria that cause gingivitis feed on. Less plaque less bacteria.

Brush your teeth with green tea. Make your cup like you normally would if you were drinking it, dip your toothbrush in repeatedly while brushing.

Prefer your treatment in a pill? CO-Q10 has proven to help heal infected gums. This works by eliminating some of the free radicals in your system which disrupt and hinder your body's ability to fight infections. 30mg is the recommended dose.

Other pill-form treatments include folic acid, also available as a mouthwash; and Vitamins C (1000 mg daily), vitamin E (400 IU daily) and even B3/niacin (500 mg) and B6 (100mg) are all proven to improve the gums and help the battle with gingivitis.

Still other home treatments for inflamed gums include swishing a tablespoon of sunflower oil around your mouth for about 20 minutes followed by gargling with salt water.

Of course, to keep plaque & gingivitis under check, proper oral hygiene is the best defense. Brush at least twice daily; use an anti-bacterial mouthwash, and consult your dentist regularly.
