Home Treatments to Soothe Toothaches

When your tooth aches it can be one of the most nagging and irritating, not to mention, uncomfortable pains in your body. Toothaches can cause your whole face and head to ache. Until you see a dentist there are a number of home treatments you can apply to help soothe your terrible toothache. The first, and best, home treatment you can try is to use some hydrogen peroxide to help kill the bacteria that is causing your painful toothache. Toothaches are caused by bacteria that cause an infection in the gum or nerve of the tooth. Hydrogen peroxide works just as good, if not better, than any over the counter medication when used correctly. First floss, then swish a mouthful of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for a few seconds. Spit it out and rinse thoroughly with water. Do this two to three days in a row.

NOTE: NEVER swallow hydrogen peroxide because it can burn your esophagus and irritate your stomach causing an upset stomach. And don't use longer than three days, as the peroxide can burn your gums.

Homeopathy is another effective home treatment used to soothe toothaches. If your toothache is worse at night (aren't all of them) dissolve one tablet of Arnica 30X under your tongue for 15 minutes. You can also use Arnica to help reduce the inflammation and soothe the pain of the toothache by applying a drop of tincture to a cotton ball and place it next to the swollen gum. If your tooth hurts more when you drink hot liquids, dissolve one tablet of Chamomilla 30X under your tongue until your toothache soothes. If your tooth hurts more when you drink cold beverages, try Plantago major 6X by dissolving it under your tongue three times a day. If your tooth still aches after a cavity has been filled, dissolve one tablet of Hypericum 30X under your tongue three times a day. You can also use these home treatments after your dental visit.

Echinacea can help fight infection that causes the infection and Aloe gel (be sure to check for the gel you can use internally) can reduce the swelling. To use both of these treatments mix the contents and form a paste by opening the Echinacea capsules and mixing it with the aloe gel. Put a small amount of the paste mixture on the gum next to the toothache and let it dissolve. You can use this home treatment as much as you like. You can also put the Echinacea capsule between your cheek and the gum on the side where the toothache is, and let is dissolve. The downside with this home treatment is that you need to use it only before you go to bed or if you are not going out because it can turn your mouth green for a period of time.

To help get rid of the toxins in the infected tooth, you can apply an herbal tea bag of chamomile or calendula to your infected tooth to soothe the pain. Place the tea bag on your tooth for 15 minutes. You can use this home treatment up to three days. Another home treatment to get rid of the toxins in the tooth is activated charcoal. Mix a teaspoon of activated charcoal powder with enough water to make a paste. Put some of the paste on a piece of cotton ball or gauze and apply it to your tooth that aches. Bite down on the gauze or cotton until the paste surrounds the tooth. Leave the paste on for no longer than 5 minutes, remove the gauze or cotton ball and extra paste, and rinse your mouth out with water. You can use this treatment up to four times a day. If you can't make it to the store to get any chamomile, calendula, or charcoal, then try some black tea, which can also help get rid of the toxins and soothe the aching tooth. If you have a hole or cavity in your tooth and can see the hole, put two drops of clove bud oil in it and then stick a small piece of cotton ball or gauze in the hole so it fits comfortably into the hole. This will help soothe the toothache.
