Water covers 70% of this planet; furthermore you are comprised of about 70% of water. For something so abundant we sure do spend a lot of money on large jugs and convenient single serving plastic bottles. Buying a water filtration system will save you tons of money while reducing your plastic waste and shrinking your carbon foot print. There are three main types of water filters. There are systems you can buy and have installed that automatically filter water coming into your sink. You can also buy the attachments that go on the faucet. The third option is the pitcher.

Built-in's

The different systems I was able to find ranged in price from $100-$700. These built-ins are generally found under the sink and use a combination of paper and carbon filters that remove sediment and most disagreeable flavors you may find in city tap water. The most popular is the reverse osmosis system that works by using a semi permeable membrane that allows pure water to pass through while trapping almost all harmful contaminants. The cost of the system is in the midrange averaging at $170. For most built in systems replacement filters can cost from $10-$60 with reverse osmosis filters coming in at about $30. Do some research into what would work best for your home before making such a big investment.

Faucet attachments

If you want to take it slow you can find a wide variety of attachments for your kitchen and bathroom faucets. Pur is probably the best known brand but there are all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors and Pur now offers the flavored water option. They're also available for the shower head so you can ensure you're washing with the cleanest water possible. These attachments range in price from $20-$50 and are easy to install and the filters are also affordable ranging from $10-$15 in price. I like how many different styles they have available but dislike the large filter hanging out in my sink.

Water pitchers

For ease of use, affordability, and aesthetic value I prefer the water pitcher. Coming in a variety of styles and sizes the filter allows you to have the clean convenience of a water filtration system without the cost of purchasing and maintaining a large system. Pitchers are mainly available from Brita and Pur and the main difference is in the design of the pitcher. Pitchers are priced from $20-$40 and filters are from $8-$12 a piece. The only real downside, which isn't too big of a deal, is that you have to make sure you remember to refill the container when you empty it, but even if you don't the water is generally filtered within five minutes of filling the pitcher.

There are many different brands available on the market today and most of them utilize similar filtration systems like reverse osmosis or carbon filters. Need three great reasons to look into water filtration? Conserving water, saving, plastic, and saving cash. Need another? Our bodies need water to complete everyday functions like digestion and cell renewal. Water is so important and clean pure water is a must. Remember to research to find the best alternative for your house and make sure you know the start-up costs as well as the cost of filters.
