1. Define Your Work Space
When tax time comes around, you will need to be able to define your work space in regards to what percentage of your home is dedicated to work. To erase any doubts that your work space is used for something other than work, you need to clearly segregate it from your normal living space. A great way to do this is to use a room or your garage as your work space. If these are not options, then use masking tape to define your work space. Then measure the square footage that this space makes up and divide it into the total square footage of your home. This is the percentage that you will use when calculating your home office deductions.
2. Keep Things Organized
Keeping things organized is essential for running a home-based business. Clutter not only impacts your ability to find paperwork and other items when you need them, but it can also impact your emotional state. Work spaces that are cluttered make you feel anxious and stressed, while well organized work spaces help you to feel in control. It also makes a much better impression on clients.
3. Stay On Top of Business Laws
In order to ensure that you are running your business legally, you need to keep up with the latest changes to business law. This is particularly true if you have a staff. Business law information can be retrieved free of charge from the IRS and from your state's government website.
4. Set a Schedule
In order to run a business effectively, you need to set a schedule. While this schedule can be flexible so that you can deal with family issues that come up, it also needs to have some authority over what you do each day, week or month. A schedule, even a vague one, can be used to keep you on track by providing you with a visual reminder of deadlines and important meetings.
5. Network
It is easy to feel isolated and disconnected from society when you run a home-based business. This isolation not only produces negative emotional problems for the business owner, but it can also limit the potential of your company. A good way to overcome this problem is to network. Your networking can be done online, but it is also important to network physically as well, such as by joining local small business organizations.
