A charter school is still a public school, meaning it is tuition free, and governed by the state and school district in which it is administered. Community members, teachers, parents, and even business entities can develop a charter school. Even local businesses and non-profit organizations can establish a charter.
Charter schools do have a lot more lea way when it comes to instruction in comparison to traditional public schools, which makes them a great resource for home schoolers.
Now, not every charter school offers a home school program, but those that do, typically provide you the parent with a credential multiple subject teacher who works closely with you and your child or children. They assist you with curriculum development and selection, lesson plans, assignments, testing, and assessment. They provide you with guidance and support when you are stuck or unsure. They are a great asset; especially to new homeschoolers. You typically meet at the school, a central location, or even at your home to discuss the progress of your child, and or children. They collect work samples and may do a few tests like spelling, math, or reading.
The best thing about Charter schools is that the resources are free, the teacher's assistance is free, and if you feel over whelmed they are there to assist you. Students still have access to the traditional standardized tests, in addition to many extra curriculum activities that they may not have had in a traditional public school, and the one-on-one with a dedicated parent.
Even though most parents go with a local charter school, there are also virtual charter schools popping up around the globe.
One of my favorite online Charter schools is California Virtual Academies. They utilize the K12 curriculum, which consists of hands on materials, excellent literature, and interesting assignments that are organized in an online calendar for students and parents to utilize to organize their home school day. With this charter school all your materials are mailed to you via UPS, and you as the parent organize your child's lessons and assignments in a way that is best for you. Perhaps you do math, reading, and writing every day, and history and science once a week. Or perhaps your child loves history and they want to do more. They have that option. With the K12 curriculum the assignments are pre written and organized allowing a student to work at their own pace.
If you do not live in California the K12 curriculum is used in many Virtual Charter Schools all over the globe. They even have an international program if you are a military parent, or tend to travel a lot. So if you are new to homeschooling a Charter School may be the way for you to go.
